new .223 loader with questions

first question, primer pockets winchester fired brass with what appears to be small ring completely or partially indented around fired primers. new primers will not enter primer pocket. are these crimped primers in winchester brass or is this caused by gun that fired them or what?
ok, 2nd question, tried to set sizing die for snug fit when chambering rounds in my new .223 but now have 50 rds. loaded too snug chamber but cannot remove without tapping on charging handle with wood dowel and hammer. a stronger younger person might be able to eject them. would these still be safe to fire if they chamber normally?

Sounds like crimped primers military doesn't use Winchester too much so weird get a pocket reamer. Far as the size sounds like you need a small base sizing die. I wouldn't fire anything that I have to dowell out of the cheer you might sear the bullet in deeper thus creating a potentially dangerous situation hope this helps

#2 phillips to the rescue after you remove the primer.

3 twists of the venerable phillips, and you will be good to go !

I use a #3 for large primers, a #2 for smalls. Works like a charm.

You don't need a Small base die.

You needed to adjust the regular sizing die to push the shoulder back where it came from before you loaded 50 rounds of them.

My advice would be to pull them.

You can possibly get slam fires with a semi-auto if they are too tight to chamber easily.

I also suggest you get an L.E. Wilson case gage for use in setting your sizing die properly.

In the future, if you get a round stuck in an AR-15.
Do Not beat on the charge handle.

Instead, pull on the charge handle to release the latch and slam the butt of the rifle on the ground.
Bolt carrier inertia will yank the stuck round out.

Without bending or breaking the charge handle beating on it..

sizing die, touching plus 1/4 turn in will turn in further, did not have to beat on chg hndl just tap on dowel but thanks for butt stock tip. thanks for phillips 2 tip looked for reamer all backorder thanks, joe

I've picked up plenty of WCC brass with crimped primers on the High Power competition field.


You already got the answers for how to solve both those problems you're having.

I had the same problem with chambering my first rounds. Using a different press now & good to go. I feed my problem rounds to a bolt action to size them to fit the AR.
