Paid about 8 and a half for both of them and some fancy grips. The 642 is for my woman, she ignored most of my arguments about it. Yet somehow I ended up with one too. The 637. Originally I was looking at a new charter arms bulldog in .44spl. But with 4000 rounds of .38spl I figured what the hell. We are going to do the CA CCW thing (against my will, personal reasons) so she could carry concealed.... But now I feel like I made a mistake. For less than 600 I could have had a taurus m85 and the charter .44spl.... Basically I was talked into the S&Ws for the brand....Did I just get suckered?

My wife loves her 642 and I love my 442. I've read lot's of heart-ache posts about cheaper wheel guns... I think you made a smart decision.

making me feel a little better. I mean, I trust S&W. I have a SW380 that is supposedly a POS by everyones calling...but I havent had a single problem. I like the little thing. I however heard alot of bad things about them. I am again falling for alot of nay say on these two and its making me second guess it. I can deal with just about anything, i have and do own and shoot alot worse guns. I am just hping for her it isn't bad. I tried to talk her into a ruger LCP/LC9 even an LCR (I love and trust Ruger)

Run. Don't walk. And thank the salesman for selling you a good firearm instead of cheaper ones with quality control problems.

Out of curiousity, why don't you want to get your permit?

The only thing you MAY regret is getting a model with a hammer, if you ever pocket carry the gun.

I don't think that you got suckered. I don't have a taurus or charter but I have heard a lot of complaints about them. I've handled plenty of taurus and charter revolvers, and both are not even close to the fit, finish, and overall quality of a smith and wesson or ruger revolver. Of course, every brand has it's lemons that need to be sent back. I think you have two fine revolvers that will last you much longer than that 4000 rounds of 38 special.

The LCP is probably the most difficult pistol to shoot well that I own!

My 442 is much easier to handle effectively. (The LCR is nice too. I would say they are pretty much equal guns.)

Somebody here recommended the book THE SNUBBY REVOLVER by Ed Lovette. This book makes everyone feel better about their choice of a snubbie for concealed carry.

S&W J Frames

My Opinion from Past Experience:
The longevity of a Smith speaks for the Value of the Guns , Old and New.
You spent a little more Now , but 25 Years from now the Value of the Guns will still
be there. Plus you will still have a Quality Firearm.

Note:Now buy her a Carry Purse to go with the Gun.

It is interesting how women match J Frames with their Outfits and their Purses.

my wife carries a Taurus .32mag 2" ported in her car. It works for her, but at the range she shoots a 686 6" in .38 sp and qualified for ccw licence. I have only seen a few women and some men unable to shoot a auto ie: 9mm any size with out a jam. I have 3 daughters and have no problem with a 92fs, x wife and present wife have jams with autos. The gals can shoot the wheel guns.

I bought a Taurus Tracker in 44 mag because it was cheaper. Big mistake. Lesson learned. Next time I'll kick in a few extra macaroons and get a Smith. Anytime you want to trade, let me know. You can't go wrong buying quality guns.

The salesman did you a favor. I'm not sure how the transaction went down, but if he surmised you could afford the S&W, it was certainly the better gun to buy.

Of course, you still want to take care of the gun - learn how to shoot it, clean it properly, etc. They will last you forever.

yeah, I think you made a mistake.. leastways half mistake

Because you got what somebody else said you ought to, instead of what you wanted. None of which has anything to do with most of the pro/con reasons you are most likely to hear.

I happen to be a big fan of S&Ws, and even though I don't like the trend they have been on ever since "Safe-T-Hammer" bought the name, I think they are one of the top revolver makers in the world still, which Charter and Taurus are not, no matter how much volume Taurus sells, but they both do some real nice specific models.

It's your hand, her hand, and his-n-hers money, not mine, or Mrs. X, or Mr Z.
so... my opinion really don't count, and no reason it should

You are not ever going to quite get over thinking you should have done the Taurus 85 and the Charter 44 special
(The 85 being a truly fine snubbie IMO, prior comments notwithstanding, and I myself have no opinion to state on the Charter 44sp either way; none of which really should much matter all that much to you; plenty of shooters own and enjoy both/either).

S&W 642/637 plenty to love, and no shortage of folks to love 'em for what they are, and for very good reasons.

The wife had her reasons, respect that.
The 642 was her pick, so it's the right pick for her; if you picked the right woman to be your partner, don't 2nd guess that; 50/50 ain't a bad batting average. Good partners are a lot rarer than good guns, you are already way ahead of the curve, at least two out of three in this inning.

You just might yet learn to love that 637, but if you don't, they ain't a bit hard to sell or trade.

next time, make certain she gets the gun she wants, and you get the gun you want
that.... priceless, VISA or no VISA
(and cheaper than 4000 rounds of centerfire ammo !)

Not wanting my Ccw is a California thing. I'll still het it but this is not my home. A am an open carry guy. I am not now nor ever have been a criminal, I don't think I should have to hide the fact that I own and carry firearms. But since I am here, I'll probably get it. I'm not really bummed on the salesman, he's a decent guy who has sold me plenty on a good deal. I don't feel raped, just that I let someone behind a counter sway my choice. And my woman, she's a smart gal. She picked the smith for all the right reasons. Liked the feel, trusted the name etc. I guess I'll see how it all holds up in four thousand rounds or so. Lol.

I've been hearing less than favorable reviews and whatnot about S&W as a whole of late. I guess it's all hearsay any way. Mostly it's been about the finish and excessive cylinder play
