I am the proud owner of a brand new 642 and tomorrow will be my first day to take her for a spin. I just want to know what is the best way to clean the gun. What is safe to use on the alloy frame? I have some Break Free cleaner is that safe to use or what is recommended? Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Part 1 is the largest thread on the board, and was closed (maintenance was becoming an issue). Its url is in my sig.

Part 2 is H-E-R-E.

Breakfree is excellent and will not harm your finish. I use Q-tips and a cloth for overall cleaning and Flitz metal polish to clean up the front of the cylinder.

Go to the Smith & Wesson forum and there is an article by Cylinder & Slide
on how to lubricate your revolver.

Congratulations, the 642 has been my favorite for over two years now! I have two, one for carry and another with laser grips that stays in the house for home defense for my wife when I'm away.

Thanks guys! Awesome help I appreciate it. I originally was going to get the fatorey 642 with CT Grips but feeling it and looking at it I think I will like the LG 405 grips better. Do any of you have the 405's on your 642? I have heard one guy say they were too bulky and other love them. I just wondered how they would be with hand fit and trigger reach and also being in your front pocket where I plan to carry. Thanks for pointing me to some good info. Happy shooting!

I have the CTC 405's. Love them.

As far as cleaning, I use Hopps #9 on all my firearms. use a bore snake after shooting followed by a patch & copper brush. Oil lightly after cleaning.

My "house gun" has the CT-305 grips on it, I prefer that for home defense so the user can have a full grip for maximum control. Also, the environment for home defense will likely be in the dark. The glowing red dot is especially confidence inspiring to my wife who doesn't shoot regularly.

I tried a set of 405's for my carry 642 and sold them after a couple of weeks. They conceal nice but there is not enough to grap on to, in my opinion. I also found looking for the red dot, instead of just point and pull the trigger, slowed me down. My feeling is the laser is no advantage during a typical three foot or less self defense scenario and beyond that distance you will have the time for traditional aiming with the sights.

So I installed the traditional three finger rubber grip, only cost $12 instead of $250. They don't conceal as well but I always carry my gun in a belt holster, so the 3/4 inch difference isn't a problem.
