5.56mm LWRC M6, 16" Barrel, piston action
The M6 is their basic model. Fixed front sight post, the only rail is on the top of the receiver, comes with a Daniel Defense rear sight. I changed that for a Troy folding rear sight and added an Aimpoint H1 red dot sight. I didn't want front vertical grips, flashlights, infrared pointer or the other front handguard mounted stuff.
Notes:
1. I had never used a red dot sight before (I am mostly into C&R stuff and an Aimpoint would look stupid on an Arisaka, Mauser or Carcano yeah?). They are really cool. I learned to use the lowest setting where you can still see the dot to get the most precise point of aim.
2. After firing 200 rounds, the inside of the rifle looks clean, nearly unfired. A hell of a lot better than the M16A2 I used in the National Guard! I was very pleased with that.
3. The front sight post and the area around it gets damn hot, fast, since that's where the gas is moving the piston head. Keep your hands away from there.
4. No malfunctions of any kind.
5. Target below was 30 rounds from a sitting position at 100 yards, target diameter is 10" (pistol target). Not exactly going to win any contests, but it's "good enough".
6. One thing that I didn't understand before regarding the red dot sight and the iron sights - you can use both, it's not either / or. You can look over the rear sight through the red dot sight and put your dot on the target. Or you can use the iron sights and your red dot will appear right at the tip of the front sight post. The point of aim and bullet impact is the same.
7. The hanguard removal was hard, a 2 man job. Hopefully that gets easier.
Thanks for the good advice I got on here, it really helped me choose the rifle I wanted. I'm 100% happy with this set up.
