I picked up an XDS 4.0 9mm this week as it fit a need in my carry rotation. I had a chance to go to the range today and it’s a definite keeper.

We put about 400 trouble free rounds through it, starting with 115 and 124 grain FMJRN ammo and working our way up to Underwood’s 124 grain +P and +P+ ammo using Gold Dots. I did talk to Springfield before using the +P+, and they told me it would be fine in limited numbers. It handled everything well, and the recoil was negligible, even with the +P+ ammo.

I was impressed with its accuracy. We were shooting at a 2/3 size IPSC plate from 12 yards, and in slow fire hits were almost 100%. Shooting double and triple taps or more, it consistently came right back on target for accurate follow up shots.

My biggest concern was that my XDS 45 can have feed issues if the slide is not racked hard. That issue does not exist with this 9. I’ve tried to create that problem, chambering a number of different hollow points and going as far as riding the slide to slow it down. It’s fed everything without issue. I don’t know anything I’d change about this gun, and it looks like Springfield hit a home run with it.

With your XDs .45 why do you need to rack the slide unless you are carrying with an empty chamber?

Otherwise, lock the slide back, insert the mag, and slingshot it. Remove the mag and top it off. Good to go.

I have an XDs in .45 and love the thing. NEVER a bobble of any kind. Quite accurate too. My only difficulty is that the thing is a little difficult to get a LOADED round out of the thing when you want to unload it. Just not enough room in the shorty.

I have two XDS 45s (great carry guns accurate and reliable ) they take a little getting used to, you have to rack the slide like you mean it, to chamber a round or to eject a round. Once you get the hang of it, never a problem.
Note: When I got my first one about 3yrs ago, I thought they sent the "target model" by mistake. :) Yea, after several thousand rounds, I am a fan.

Moxie,

First, thank you for your service. In answer to your question, I haven't had feed issues with the XDS .45 when shooting it or using the slide release. I stumbled into the hand racking issue at the range when the slide failed to lock upon me shooting the last round in the magazine. I hand racked it, and it failed to feed. That led me to finding out that some, not all of them could have that issue. Mine feeds fine with HST's, which is a great SD round so it's what I use. Other rounds don't feed as well. I understand that the odds of having to use the gun for SD are negligible. The odds of using it and having to reload are even more negligible. Having to use it and reload by hand racking it because the slide didn't stay open is almost guaranteed never to happen, but given the choice of having a gun with or without that issue, I'd rather have one without it.

The other issue I ran into, and it's my problem, not the XDS's is that over the years I broke my right wrist once and hand twice. Those injuries seem to be catching up to me, as my wrist has started to hurt after shooting the XDS .45. The recoil on the 9 is not bad, so it seems to be a better fit for me.

Tom,

I'm now understanding your problem a little better. There's a good chance you've a mag problem.

Recommend you call SA and discuss. They might send new mags or a return label for your gun so they can fix it. Regardless of the odds of having to use the gun for SD, it should run perfectly.

(I've broken my right wrist twice, and left once. Ouch!)

Thanks for the suggestion. I bought it when Springfield had their free magazine promotion, plus I bought the 6 round magazine when it came out so I have at least 6 magazines for it. I'll try it with different magazines, and if it happens with all of them I'll send it back to Springfield. If it is magazine related, I'll call them to resolve that.

Moxie,

Thanks again for the suggestion. The magazines may have been it. I had a chance today to try a different magazine and it was fine. When I have a little more time during the week I'll test all the magazines to confirm that was the problem.

Tom

4 out of the 6 magazines cycle well. 2 have issues. I'll call Springfield in the morning.

Thanks again for the help.

Seriously, the XDs shoots great!

Attached are pictures of the falsely accused of having issues when it really was the magazines XDS 45 and the worked great out of the box 9.

Springfield has a free magazine promotion going on until the end of the month. I ordered them through their web site last week and received them today. Kudos to them for the quick turnaround.
