I'm trying to hook someone up with an affordable general purpose semi-auto .308 rifle and I've come across a new Century Cetme as an option(the only option under $2k option available today). These are certainly new from the distributor and seem to be sturdy and assembled right. I realize these aren't the most refined rifles(kind of like Spain's answer to the Avtomat Kalashnikova) but are they reliable and serviceable in the accuracy department?

The only suspect part I see on the rifle is the rear sight(seem flimsy and not conducive to accuracy) but that's easily rectified. From what I understand these are delayed blowback 7.62 NATO(not .308 Win) rifles.

Does anyone out there have any actual experience with Century's current Cetmes? What price is too much in today's insane post-obama/holder(let's ban American's weapons for Mexico) America?

ive owned 3 of them through the years and they were all good guns. Just make sure you feed them military ammo and not comercial.

I much more prefer the FAL platform, just my opinion. I think you have more options to choose from. I have a Century L1A1 built on a Imbel receiver that works great. I know Century can be hit or miss, but the FAL's are not hard to make work right if you have some glitches.

They seem to hit and miss in the quality construction department. Many people have had problems with the Century-built CETMEs due to canted sights, mis-aligned stock-pin holes, worn internals, and ground bolts. If you get one, I would advise your friend to take someone with him that knows how and what to look for in order to avoid these problems. I have an early one with the cast stainless steel receiver and love it. It is accurate, reliable and a blast to shoot. However, I feel like I must have been lucky in my purchase since so many others have had problems.

I ahhhhhhh "owned" one of the early Century mis-ass-embled CETME's. In 18 months, it spent 17-1/2 of those months in 1 of 3 places...In transit to Century Service, in Century Service, in transit from Cenruty service.

It had every failure you can list, short of Ka-boom! Failed to feed/fire/extract/eject/return to battery/hold a magazine in place.
