I wondered if anyone had issues with swapping to the Mako/Zahal quad rail forearm, (both are the same one), and I did. I have some small hand tools, they came in handy - what would have been handier was INSTRUCTIONS!
All the card says, "no gunsmithing required". Should have given just a FEW more details.
I didn't know how to get the other upper handguard off the metal back, had no idea I needed to. Finally figured out you rotate it to the bottom of the metal part, and pull off. The new upper requires a bit of jiggling to slide around. But the LOWER, ie carramba! It took a hammer and the long thin allen wrench supplied to hammer the retaining pin out. I still am not quite sure I got it all the way in - need a brass concave punch to finish it, if that's the case. Managed to put a few little scratches on my pristine reciever, too...dagnabbit. Gotta tap the back of the lower with a light hammer, (I used my inertial bullet puller, :) ) to get it to seat before you can proceed. And what a TIGHT FIT! The BSA Holosight went on OK, but made for a Weaver rail, is not QUITE right - we'll see how it holds.
Ok, so this is what it looked like first.

And now...

Anyone notice anything missing? That's right, the side rails! Why? I didn't know they had to be assembled onto the top rail BEFORE it was put on. Now, that top rail fit is soooo tight, I will need that punch to get it off again...and I decided, I really don't NEED those side rails yet, nothing to put on there...
I also noticed it take a quite a bit higher cheek weld for the BSA holosight, doesn't feel natural yet, and you can see it here...

...it isn't adjusted for accuracy either. The wife likes it. I will be taking this out to the range tomorrow morning for a shakedown shoot at a B-27 target at 100 yards to sight it in. The vertical foregrip is great, but I can really tell the additional weight out front, AND that the sling I have is all of a sudden inadequate. Dang. I am also somewhat concerned that the incredibly tight fit of everything will tweak the barrel enough to throw POA and such off - we'll see. Shouldn't. I hope.

I like the fixed stock, that's why I didn't buy the uber expensive collapsing/folding getups - $350 a pop. Plus buy the grip and all the furniture too, so I'll stick with this one, for now. :)
Accuracy versus the AKs I have shot, and the SKS rifles I have fired, the VZ-58 is far in front. AKs I owned inlude a Norinco, a Hungarian, and a WASR. SKSs include two Nornicos, one of those a paratrooper model, and two Yugos.

yes I actually liked the fixed stock as well, and im not usually the type to like them. It is much more comfortable and keeps the weight down on an already light weapon.

For whatever reason I'm a big fan of the particle board & epoxy vintage style grips, but that said, the new fore end looks like a winner.

Thanks, but I had a chance to try one of those - even the marginal recoil of 7.62x39mm makes those metal folders kinda rough on my old face. :) If I were to get a folder and new pistol grip, it would be the Mako AR style collapseable/folder plus ergonomic grip, or, if they'd lower the price a bit, the Galil style folder. It's gotta fit me right, or it won't get shot, and gather dust. But I do appreciate the thought - Czechpoint is a good outfit, one I have used more than once.

Nice post. Just curious, what's a ballpark reasonable price for a VZ? That's an option for me in CT where AK-47s are banned but AK-74s and .223 AKs are fine. :banghead:

My VZ 58 was $800 with fiber board furnature and no bayo lug from Centerfire Arms. Made by D-Technik. All the color matches. I got mine
in 2008.
Century Arms came out with one cheaper now...and it has a bayo lug.

My brother put an ace fixed stock with appropriate adapter on his vz-58 and he's running an eotech. the cheek weld on that is high enough to work with sights like the eotech and yours. However seeing through the iron sights is pretty rough with a higher cheek weld.

+1 -- the standard military folder on the vz58 isn't real comfortable or user friendly. I'd consider it the weapon's main flaw in a lot of ways. I suppose a bit of pipe insulation or 550 cord might help but could have been a lot better from the start.
