Hi guys --

A few days ago, my girlfriend called and mentioned that a friend of hers was looking to sell a Lee N. Field rifle (her words, not mine) and wanted to know if I knew anything about them. I've always been a little fascinated and told her to let the guy know I was interested. He believed it was a No. 1 rifle.

I went over to the guy's house and picked up the Enfield the other day... turns out it wasn't a No. 1 but a No. 4 Mk. in .303 British I which excites me. Unfortunately, it had been sporterized, but for the price, I couldn't say no to a piece of history.

Here's what I know for... Canadian made Long Branch Armory produced 1944 No. 4 Mk. I* that was converted to a Mk. 3 later in life. The conversion makes it a No. 4 Mk. I*/3 and was done at Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerley via factory through repairs.

It was sporterized later in life and currently sports a less-than-original stock which I'll be looking to replace. But here she is in her current glory... the stock is nice and fits me well. Just not original. I'll be working to track down proper surplus stock to restore it to its former glory.

Don't worry, I've got headspace gauges on the way. Want to double check the headspace before I shoot it. The previous owner only fired 20 rounds through it and sold because he wanted something with more affordable ammo. Right up my alley since I've been looking for a new round to reload.

It's hard to see well on my droid, but have the barrel & front sight been shortened/replaced? Nice looking wood - you ought to be able to pay for some original wood selling it. How's the bore & chamber? I would slug the barrel for sure since later in the war tolerances got relaxed.

Maj Dad- good eye... the barrel has been shortened to 20.5" (about 4" cut off) along with the original sights... now that I think of it I think that means the correct stocks would be out of the question.

Which makes my decision easier! I'll leave it as is since I'm really liking this stock!

Invented by Mr. Lee N. Field. I loved that. The GF sounds like a nice lady.:)

I appreciate the rifle model's historic significance and can understand your desire to set it right, but I'm also partial to hot rods and race cars and minimalized-machinery for the sake of lighter weight and increased efficiency (dangerous game calibers notwithstanding).

You have a sweet rifle, there. I'm looking forward to a range report! Congrats!

:)

Last year I picked up a Number 5 that had been sporterized so the front cone and sight had been cut off. I ordered a replacement online but the end of the barrel had to be turned and sleeved to fit the replacement inner bore. It can be made somewhat back to original if you wish to shoot iron sights rather than a scope but if you prefer a scope then why bother. I have found my rifles made by Lee N. Field to be pretty good shooters and if you reload the ammo costs are very affordable.

She's a shooter herself... actually our second date was to the range. She does handguns, and I'm just getting her into skeet and trap shooting.

Besides, by letting me buy it, she knows she gets to play with it!

I think I'll be leaving it and just track down an original Lee N. Field No. 4 one day.

And I do reload... definitely looking forward to getting everything going with the .303.
