after crippling a duck at 30 yards and having it get carried away by the outgoing tide, I have had my fill of steel shot.

used hevi-shot two days later and i was getting clean kills (hit the water dead) at 40 yards. It might be expensive, but i no longer have to hit a duck twice to bring it down.

I think steel can be effective when shooting at close range over dekes, but i will never trust it for pass shooting ever again.
 
Totally agree with all you have written.I have mixed it up this season,after a few discussions on this site.I still use Bismuth,but for a clean kill especially on our geese Hevi Shot wins all the time.
 
Guys use steel because it's 1/3rd the cost, then end up shooting 3 times as many rounds.

I've had a few hard core duck hunters that swear the new stuff works. Maybe on ducks close. For geese, it's the good stuff. You owe it to the animal to make a clean hit.

I am working with Hevi from now on. I just hate see the ducks crippled like they were. It was sort of depressing to honest. Maybe a manufacturer will come out with something cheaper than $25 per box of 10.
 
Hevi shot's fine, but I don't need it over decoys on potholes. I kill 'em quite dead at 40 yards and in with fasteel, Kent or Winchester Xpert HV number 3 shot. I reserve the expensive stuff for geese.

There have been steel shot laws here since 1980. I would prefer lead, given the choice, but I can't afford hevi shot on ducks as much as I hunt 'em down here. I just decoy 'em in and pass on the long shots, try to turn 'em with the call which I can sometimes, and get 'em closer. It's hunting vs shooting revisited with shotguns this time. LOL
 
I agree with you mcgunner, close in over dekes steel is fine. late season here the birds don't like dekes, so it's more of a pass shooting game
