This year I took three new hunters to the field. Two of them shot their first deer (a doe and and eight point buck). I wrote stories about those hunts just after they happened and posted them here. They had experienced the first part of hunting back in December; they shot the rifles at the range, learned about deer behavior and anatomy, spent time in a stand, watched a bunch of wildlife, killed a deer, helped track deer, and watched the gutting process etc.

Recently I had those hunters back to the house for dinner. I wanted them to experience the hunt from the field to the table. I left work early one day last week and came home in time to prepare the meal. I laid out four tenderloin, sliced a garlic clove in half and rubbed the meat down with it. Then I sprinkled the venison with cracked pepper and rosemary, wrapped them in bacon, and put them on the smoker until they reached 135 degrees.

A few hours later, these three young men, friends since kindergarten, sat down to a feast of smoked venison, potatoes and a wedge salad. Very few words were uttered once they began to eat. The only thing I remember one of them saying is "This is the most tender meat I've ever had in my life." They were in awe of how delicious a properly prepared piece of venison can be.

It was the finishing touch on a very successful season for them. (Sorry, no pics, I had my hands full putting the entire meal together on my own.)

Great story. They're hooked for life now! I'm cooking some round steaks for the family today. Sea salt, coarse ground pepper and into some butter in a hot cast iron skillet. One of my daughter's is doing the vegetarian thing. However, she eats our venison every time! Pretty funny lol.

You are teaching them well , good job .

I have heard so many people say they do not like venison and I believe they did not like what they ate . If it is prepared right , I think there is very little difference in that and beef . The inner loin is my favorite meat , including beef . My sister can fry the best backstrap that you have ever eaten and I make a pretty good roast .

I remember one time when I was at my friends house , I cooked a venison roast in the crook pot . Her son was not home and we had just finished eating when he and his friend came home . He walked in and said " something smells good " and I said go get y'all some , we didn't tell them what it was ( he always said that he didn't like deer meat ) and he didn't ask . They both finished their first plate and said I am going to get some more . I said you like that deer meat and he said " that's not deer meat momma , is it " . They still got seconds and I think they like venison .

At work when I would bring a picture of the deer I killed , I would also bring a picture of the meal I prepared , they really got a kick out of that . I think that showed some of the people that might have thought that hunters were just killers , that we were not just killers and that we just get some of our food in the way that maybe their grandparents had to in the past and it is a heritage and challenge that we enjoy doing .

Now that I'm "taking a break" from working (stupid injury overseas) and deer season ended today, I'm going to experiment with some different squirrel and coon recipes and try to find something I like. The only reason I never got into hunting either is because I never cared for the meat, and I don't believe in killing stuff unless you are either A- going to eat it, or B- its a legit threat and/or pest. For me, "not liking a critter" doesn't qualify it as a pest. At minimum, it has to either threaten property, or a native species or livestock. Which means hogs and coyotes have a 24/7 "green light".

How and what did you injure? I hope the recovery goes quick and smooth. I'm with on the squirrel recipe, but you lost me at coon!!! I've got an acquaintance who grew up eating them, it's a pretty "old school" thing to do nowadays. :)

Hogs have done some crazy damage everywhere they were introduced. Good hunting to you.

I was able to bring pictures, and a meal from my hunt. Pulled pork BBQ sandwiches go over pretty good at lunchtime.

Injured my left foot slipping on some ice going up some stairs. Like I said, STUPID injury.

It's always something simple ain't it? My Marine Corps career ended due to a flag football injury. :fire:

I hope you heal up quick.
