"ONE GUN A MONTH" BILL HEADS TO SENATE FLOOR MONDAY - AGAIN!

The New Jersey State Senate is scheduled to once again consider S1774 on Monday, February 23, 2009. The legislation was previously scheduled for consideration late last year, but action was postponed as a result of overwhelming grassroots efforts of the Second Amendment community.
Simply stated, S1774 (http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2008/Bills/S2000/1774_I1.HTM) would prohibit law-abiding citizens who have already undergone extensive criminal background checks from purchasing more than one handgun within a 30-day period. This bill places arbitrary limits on our Second Amendment rights and would set a dangerous precedent. If passed, this bill gives anti-gun extremists carte blanche to further hinder your right to purchase firearms. Next it could be one rifle or shotgun per 30-day period or even one handgun per six months or year. It is critical that this legislation be defeated.

Has anyone considered the consequences to One Gun a Month?

I participate in a sport called “Cowboy Action Shooting”. It’s a harmless little game where we all dress up in cowboy clothes and using period authentic firearms shoot at targets in a predetermined order based on an Old West scenario. It’s a lot of fun. However, the criteria are that you have two, not one, pistols to shoot the scenario. I purchased my two guns at the same time; got a nice matched pair of revolvers that are replicas of the Colt 1873 revolver. So now you guys are considering preventing me, an honest citizen and likeable guy who just likes to play cowboy, the right to buy two guns at the same time.
Why? I went to the police department and filled out all the paperwork and gave my fingerprints. The police chief checked up on me with my two mandatory references. The State Police ran my fingerprints and proved beyond doubt that I am not a criminal. They also checked my mental health background to assure I’m not crazy. At the gun shop I once again filled out still more paperwork and the shop owner made the required call to the State Police to once again assure I am not a criminal. Everyone is perfectly assured that I am no risk to anyone so why not allow me to buy as many guns as I want in a month?
If this law should pass it will be a strong incentive to turn many to the black market to purchase their firearms. Why not? What’s to loose? Don't honest citizens deserve the same privileges exercised by the criminals? Criminals never get caught buying guns from the black market and can buy whatever they want, whenever they want and how many they want without one single care about the laws used to restrict honest citizens (who, by the way, are not the folks you should be treating like criminals.) Not to mention they don’t have to invest one moment on paperwork, fingerprinting or waiting for background checks. They don’t even have to pay sales tax either. Not obeying the law is far easer than obeying it. Do they have a stronger lobby than us honest folks?
Has everyone forgotten the history lesson about Prohibition? During Prohibition, rather than carrying a criminal stigma, it was hip and cool to be the one who had a ready supply of liquor available. Black market booze became so plentiful that practically everybody was buying it at will. The original intent was to legislate moral behavior by outlawing liquor but the end result was increased alcoholism, dramatically decreased respect for the law, a huge boost to the revenues of organized crime and a corresponding increase in political and judicial corruption.
With every gun control bill that is passed, more and more gun trading will go underground. The path of least resistance is, well, easier. Is that what you want to do with the firearms market; make it far more prolific, easier to obtain and totally beyond your control? This bill is pro-crime not crime control.
Pass this bill and the consequences will be long lived and not at all what the sponsors intend. Stop whittling away at our individual God given and Constitutionally protected rights! And stop being a marketing tool for organized crime.
