Hi,

Does anyone know New Jersey weapons laws? I'm taking a two day trip there, and am legally unable to carry my gun: They don't have any reciprocity with MA, so my license isn't any good there.

Do they outlaw other weapons, such as knives, batons, or pepper spray?

I'm doing a web search on it, but I figured that tapping the information available here couldn't hurt :)

Thanks,
atk

Knives: Under 4 inches, single-edge only.

Pepper spray: Legal for proles if 7/8 ounce or less. Whether this means total or just the OC is debatable.

Batons: I don't think they've gotten around to banning them yet.

Of course, none of these laws apply to you if you are a registered member of the Mafia. :scrutiny:

http://www.njcsd.org might be a good source of further information.

You've done it now. There's a 300 page orange book that discusses the dubious legality of knives, batons, and sprays.

Long story short:

Sprays: OK, must be less than 3/4 ounce

Batons: grey, bad idea

Knives: depends on what kind, if it's a dirk/dagger/stilleto, probably not, otherwise possibly OK, and whether you've got an "explainable lawful purposes" under "manifestly lawful circumstances."

The other thing to be aware of is that beyond carrying your gun, you've got to transport it unloaded, in a securely fasted case in your trunk, only to or from your residence and places like a shooting range, gunsmith, and so on.

Also, don't take hollowpoints, any of the listed "assault weapons", or any magazine capable of holding more than 15 rounds into the state.

geekWithA.45,

While that information's great to know, MA doesn't have reciprocity with NJ, so I don't plan to carry my gun, anyhow.

ATK:

I understood you didn't plan to carry, it wasn't clear whether you where planning to have it with you at all, or whether you where just gonna leave it @ home, which I now take to be the case.

Welcome to our dark & fascist place! Enjoy your stay, and remember not to feed the socialists as they flutter about, lest they become dependent on humans. :)

geekWithA.45,

Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't realize where the miscommunication was.

Yes, I'm going to leave it at home - it won't do me any good all locked up, so I'm not gonna bother bringing it at all. I'll bring something else that's all legal like :)

Do you have any reccomendations for places to visit? I plan on going to Paramus (sp?), to visit the Nocona boots fit-center there (it's the closest one to me). My feet are an odd shape - really thin, with no instep - so I can't just buy boots off the rack.

pdmoderator,

Interesting site... it looks a lot like LL Bean :)

If I have time (we're driving down, and only spending one night before we drive back), I'll stop in :)

atk,

I think it's like what Bean used to be like, maybe 50 years ago. Serious camping and hiking stuff.

FWIW, it is legal for you to bring firearms into PRNJ. The :cuss: :banghead:  yellow card is only needed to purchase them. (If you want to go shooting, just yank out your PRMA driver's license and explain the situation.)

As you've surmised, carry is out of the question for proles.
