The ZASTAVA LK M48/24, M48/63

I found it here under "sporting rifles":

http://www.zastava-arms.co.rs/english/civilni.htm

Is Zastava still making this gun? If so, is it being imported into the U.S.?

I can't find any importers of it just looking around online. Haven't contacted my local gun shop either.

I know I can get a surplus gun, but just kicking around the idea of a new one, at least to see if it is available in the USA and at about what price.

Thanks in advance.

Remington quit importing the 798. Some may still be on clearance racks at stores for good prices.

CZ makes new Mausers and Mini-Mausers.

Winchester makes the Model 70 again, too. REALLY nice guns again, finally.

One problem with the CZ Mausers is that they replaced the excellent Mauser striker-blocking, 3-position safety with a trigger-blocking 2-position. A mistake, in my opinion.

Vern,so did Zastava including the Charles Dalys and Remington 798s. As did Parker Hale and Rigby(IIRC). I agree that the striker safety is by far the safest but very few manufacturers use them.

Something I can't understand -- since you can buy an after-market side-swing (Winchester style) safety for these rifles. And for the Remington 700, for that matter.

There are even kits to convert the original (military style)bolt sleeve to take a Model 70 style swing safety. I prefer the sleek looks of the FN bolt style sleeve sans safety so I have to settle for a slightly inferior safety system on my sporters.

[QUOTEWhy not just get a Model 70?

The new ones are very nicely put together][/QUOTE]
personal preferance mainly. i have a pre-64 winchester 70 but i only bought it because it was priced at about half the going rate, i'll use it for trading fodder on a nice mauser sporter sometime in the future.
i think most of the manufactures go with triggerblock safetys instead of mauser & win70 style safeties because of price & because the general shooting population doesn't know the difference.

I don't like the enclosed trigger on the new Model 70 -- I have a custom Springfield with a Mashburn enclosed trigger and was elk hunting in a freezing rain. Moisture got inside the trigger housing and froze, making the trigger inoperative.

Thanks for all the replies. So, it looks like the answer is that I can get a Mauser action in a sporting rifle, but not a clone of a military Mauser rifle. Is this correct?

I didn't see a Mauser on the CZ website, but I may be missing something.

Thanks again.

Yeah, I've read good and bad about Mitchell's. Basically, that they just clean up good milsurps themselves, that the bores still may vary a little in condition, etc.

The "good" about Mitchell's Mausers is you get a good looking, solid, reliable rifle. The "bad" is they are overpriced(IMO),misrepresented as collectors, they have no historical value(has no effect on a "shooter"). If you are willing to pay an inflated price(again IMO) for a like-new Mauser military style k98 then Mitchells' is for you. FWIW,if you bought a mil-surp k98 and did to it what Mitchell's does, it likely would cost you more than a Mitchell's.

Thanks. If I were paying that much, I would want a basically perfect bore and barrel, do you know if they make that guarantee?

I might look closer at their site and talk to them direct.
