Greetings.
I have been a lurker for years, and finally decided that I should register with the intent that I might one day contribute. I own/have owned a wide variety of firearms, but my hands-down favorite shooters have been my cap and ball revolvers. This forum has always been a great source of information, and it is notably better than the lore that spills freely from the leather & lead isle at my local retailer.
As far as background goes, I loaded and shot a C&B revolver for the first time in my mid teens about 20 years ago. That old 1858 replica instantly made it on my list of priorities, but obsolete and arcane firearms just don't rank highly against college, wife, kids, etc. I came close to buying the classic Ruger Old Army about six or seven years ago, but put it off yet again. I started looking into the ROAs a few years ago only to find that I had waited too long. The gun had been discontinued, and newish guns were expensive. My unfortunate wife had to endure three or four months during which all conversation (she likes conversations) revolved around a revolver. I suppose that in the end she let me buy the guns to get me back, along with the multidimensional, meandering conversations. The two ROAs I ended up with are both 7.5" in stainless. The "user" is the adjustable, brushed model. The other has fixed sights, gloss finish, and is still unfired. Every now and then, I may chance to mention the 5' fixed & glossy somehow promised by destiny, and I am lovingly reminded that two hog legs are enough for two hands... at least right now.
Anyhow it's good to be here, and it will be nice to finally see all the linked images available only to forum members.
For any interested, my favorite load is 35 grains of 777, .457 ball, Remington caps and wonder wads. Wife's favorite load is the same, except she prefers 20 grains of 777 under cornmeal filler. I know that's like saying I like vanilla ice cream, but if I had fantastical stories of smokeless loads and balls made from armor-piercing alloys invented in my basement, vanilla suddenly seems amazingly great.
One newbie question: Is there a ROA forum/owners thread on THR? Just curious...
