Hi, my name is Eddie (thunderhawk) and just joined this great site and forum. I need to know about 9mm ammo. I have a Ruger P95 and would like a good round that I can depend on for my safety and my wife who is legally blind. As I am 75 and this is my first 9mm I read and hear all sorts of things about ammo for this caliber. I bought some Cor-Bon 100gr Power Ball and seen some of the results and am not pleased. I am looking at Winchester 9mm +P Luger 124 gr Supreme PDX1 20/box that show good penetration and seperation. I am not to fond of Federal Hydra Sock unless I have good advice from you guys here on this forum. I want around 115 gr to 124gr no more. I will be carrying always.

Thanking you
Thunderhawk

You will find a lot of opinions and even some data on ammunition performance here. But frankly there is a point of diminishing returns to this.
I go with a name brand, over the counter Hollow Point self defense round, and then I worry about putting it in the bag guy well. Most analysis further than that reeks to me of misplaced mental resources. With modern ammunition most calibers, if marginally well placed will stop a fight. And that most certainly does include the 9mm.

Here is what I do. Go to a gun shop and ask for some self defense rounds.
They will ask what kind. Point to one whose name you recognize as credible.
Pay.

Right now I use Hornady Critical Defense. Because my gun feeds it well and it is just that. A brandname self defense hollow point.

You know I did just about what you said, and this is what I found out in my area
and within 30 miles of my home. Academy...no Hornady, don't know when they are going to get any. Wally World..big joke especially the sales persons. Gun dealers (3) had no preference, low on supplies. Mail order on line..Cheaper than Dirt and numerous others, all on back order.

I guess finding the right ammo I want is like what vehicle I like better than others. Some people love Fords and wouldn't buy any other vehicle, same with Chevy, Dodge and etc.

So, instead of getting other people opinion, I will go and try all brands and pick the one I like most in the way my P95 handles it plus cost.

I'd think about any 124 gr HP would be good for self defense. A lot of people tend to over think buying defensive ammo. Just make sure they work good with your gun.

And Welcome to THR.

Thanks for the Welcome BossHogg.....

My old Dad used to say "believe half of what you read, and none of what you hear". As a 75yr old senior citizen living on a small income, you just can't just go and buy boxes of different name brands and grains. So you try to cut the cost by looking for help from all sporting good stores(young kids working behind the counter), gun dealers and then go to outfits of the net. You find out you know just about as much as they do and that's...........! Either they are out in the stores or they are out of stock at the outfits on the net.

I guess I am going to go with Federal 124gr HST +P in my Ruger P95.

I have been retired from LE as a CSI for 20yrs and didn't need to carry as it would always be in the way when getting into small places, etc. I did have a
.38 S&W but gave it to my son when I retired. But now with all these hoods with home invasions I had better be ready.

Thanks again for the welcome, and really enjoy the forums.

what do you think

A friend of mind gave me some 9mm Winchester Ranger 115gr JHP. He paid 24.00 a box and they look great. I had been wanting some Ranger T, but can't seem to find any on line. My son said he found some for 68.00 on line but can't remember the site. I think the T is the old Black Talon and were over stock and Winchester bought them and changed the color. Don't know.....

Any one out there knows..............and would it be alright for a Ruger P95?

unless you are buying by the case, online shopping is pretty much a lost cause.... the big deal is when they figure in the shipping which has a hazmat fee. Shop around locally and you will be better off in general.

for range practice standard 115gr fmj (full metal jacket is fine)

for self defense as mentioned above 124 hydro shock will do (they used to call them hollow points, but that is now politically incorrect)

your P95 should eat anything you shoot.... if you have a problem, which you haven't mentioned... it would most like be limp wristing (not holding the pistol firm enough)

I normally start looking at what the major Law Enforcement Agencies use, then go from there. I try to research both ballistics testing and actual street performance of the rounds. Then I look at the cost. Then i sample and do my own testing.

When I did the above, I came up with Remington Golden Sabre, Winchester PDX, Winchester SXT, and Speer Gold Dot. I have several boxes of all four, but I chose the Winchester SXT for carry. You probably cant go wrong with any of them though. If I could only choose two , it would be the SXT and the Gold Dot. The PDX is still new and the Golden Sabres like to shed their brass jackets, unless in bonded form.

Try not to get too hung up with finding the perfect load, shot placement is where its at.

Welcome to the forum.
