New Mexico Oryx Once in a Life Time Hunt

Not that different from Rowland Ward method (7a for oryx). As far as two different length horns are concerned, I'm not sure how a single figure is determined. I had mine measured, I had had a few drinks by that time and my afrikaans is pretty bad (even when sober) so I couldn't follow the details of the conversation. A solemn nod and "veertig" (forty) was all I could really make out of it. :)

Talk about won of the gems of New Mexico public draw hunts.... what hunt can you leave your house at 530 am and be back by 930 pm with a African big game animal...woohoo!! This hunt took place on White Sands Missle Range. We checked in at gate around 10am they let us start hunting at 12pm and i harvested at 230pm 38" bull 104 yrds 30.06 180 gr winchester. He dropped so hard i didnt see it and almost shot another one luckily i snapped at last minute.View attachment 960949 View attachment 960949 View attachment 960955 View attachment 960957

Nice story and thank you for your input. With the information you provided i will be able to score my oryx but i still havent found any thing about proper etiquette for calling out horn size...on another note i came across this story about Record oryx shot at WSMR in March 2020 7 mnths before my hunt scored 101 Screenshot_20201231-092705_Chrome.jpg

101 3/8 tells me it is a total of both horns, (measured as described by method described in SCI book or R&W as HQ verified the R&W method is similar) . Only references I've heard would indicate a 40" horn is highly prized on most exotic hunts, but I'm certainly no expert.

Like you, I only measure mine out of my own curiosity. What makes a trophy in my book is the memories of the hunt itself. Matter of fact, I can think of a few coyotes and one bobcat in particular that I consider much more of a trophy than many deer and a few exotics I have taken.

The length of antlers or horns, however, don't affect the resulting product on the dinner table one way or the other one bit. ;):)

Regards,
hps

Nope, I'm sure the broken horn Oryx taste just as good.
