I am having a custom rifle in 6mm Ackley made for long distance varmint shooting.
I told the gunsmith that I was going to use Berger 108 grain bullets, H 4831 powder & Winchester brass.
I will fire form the 6mm Remington brass with a near max load with the bullet seated in the lands if needed.
It appears that the Ackley case will gain 8 or 9% volume. Does that mean that I can bump up the published 6mm Remington load data by 8 to 9% safely? I am not trying for the highest velocity possible but I do want to take advantage of the extra case volume of the Ackley.
Anyone have Pet loads for their 6mm Ackley with heavy bullets?

Brian ?

Hogdon lists the max load with a 107 grain Sierra as 46 grains of 4831.
If my chamber is cut so that unfired brass fist snugly I should not have to jam the bullet into the lands to get good bolt face contact.
Would a grain below max (45) still fully form the new shoulder?
Where can I find load data for the 6mm Ackley?
Thanks

You Can Find Data In The Ackley Books.

If you have an 8% increase in case capacity, which is highly doubtful, you can usually , BUT NOT ALWAYS , increase the propellent charge 4%. This wiil usually increase pressure by the 8% you noted, if not more. You must work up your loads to be safe. You CANNOT blithly say " well I'll shoot this load" or " I'll shoot that load " and expect to get anywhere
WHY would you go to all this trouble for one specific bullet ???

Wil ?

Which Ackley books are you refering to? I would assume that P.O.Ackley's original writings would not apply to modern powders.
I am looking for information so that I can safely develop a load and since I cannot find any carefully researched Ackley data I am relying on information from people who shoot the 6mm AI.
My main purpose of this rifle is to have a comfortable to shoot cartridge that is not expensive to load that will kill a woodchuck out to 1000 yards.
I researched a lot of different brands and weights of bullets and found that the new 108 Berger retained the most velocity and foot pounds of energy at long range. If the Berger does not work I will try something else. I will also probably load a lighter weight bullet for shorter range and or prarie dogs.
I thank you for the 4% powder increase guideline. That is the kind of information I need.
