A lot of folks think a proper rifleman ought to have THE "riflemans rifle". I didn't and I easily out shot a lot of local folks who had one. I never bought into the hype. I knew I had the skill and that any weapon was capable enough in my hands. 9 yrs of active duty in the Marine Corps only time I didn't shoot expert with the rifle was in boot camp and once when I was at the range and we got hit by Hurricane Fran. Both times I had to wear a Sharp Shooter badge and hated it. I even shot and did well in a few Service Matches, but always with the M16A2. Still I wondered about the M1A but never once took a bite from that tree so to speak.
I have owned ARs, AKs, SKS' and a FAL for a long long time. Most of them were bought back in the bad old days of the Clinton/Brady Ban era. A few years ago I even got the collector bug and bought myself a M1 Carbine (still looking for the right Garand, 03, P14 ect).
But still no M1A. I always admired them, always listen when my dad told me how accurate his was (issued at Parris Island in 1969) and sceretly I wanted one but just never got around to it... until tonight.
Its a shooter. Mostly all USGI parts. TRW barrel (03/63), SA trigger assy, HRA bolt. Early 004XXX S/N Springfield receiver. Not perfect but still very beautiful.
Range report to follow, very soon.
