I was in a very small, in the middle of nowhere town today, and saw a "mom and pop" pawnshop. They had a NICE selection of guns. I found 2 SKSs, one yugo and one norinco. Both pre ban and almost like new. Yugo $199 Norinco $219:) They had a Krag 30-40 not the original stock:banghead: but it was a springfield w/scope $429. They had a Remington 710 .300 winmag w/scope $349. The list goes on and on. I was very pleased and will be visiting again soon. I got the SKSs:neener: and will be selling one at current price leaving me the other FREE:cool: In essence, I just wanted to let you guys know that if you look under the rock no one has bothered to turn over, and has been kept pretty well in the shadows....You can still find reasonable deals. Think outside the box!

Still not sure, but probably the yugo, I just like the idea of the grenade launcher(even though...). Any suggestions/advice?

The sad thing is that my first sks back in 1990 only cost $69.95(and took 3 days of work to get all the cosmoline out). I wish I never would have parted with that one. Heck, ammo was $119 for a case of 1400 rounds(2 700 round cans in a crate)

I got the Yugo because it was in fine condition --looked like it had been issued to someone behind the lines and never used and it had a "nice" hunk of wood on it... very few dings and a crisp bore. I put a sprung firing pin in it from Murray's Gunsmithing out of Bowie, Texas. (Link) The grenade launcher appealed to me also, as well as that enormongous grenade sight.

But recently I also got a beat-up Norinco for $100 --almost the equivalent of a "ranch rifle" or cowboy special, stripped down to Just Plain Gun. Rusty bolt handle and carrier. Had to completely clean it and it worked fine after that. Enough carbon came out of it to cook an eight ounce steak.

Medium well.

I prefer the Norinco for its "handiness" ... seems reasonably accurate, but I like the gas valve cutoff on the Yugo for the simple reason that I don't have to chase brass with the gas shut off.

Actually, I like both, but the Norinco is more "wieldy," if I can put it that way.

Tell the truth, if I still had my machine shop, I'd try to 'jin up a gas shutoff for the Norinco. I'm also toying with the idea of just pulling the bolt carrier tappet out of the Norinco for the same purpose, but I don't know how that would work, or even if it would be safe. Maybe I can stick an undersized gas piston in there that did not seal in the cylinder or something.... maybe pin it in place or whatever... but just for the range, and then undo my modifications to return it to semiauto status.

Sort of a work / thought in progress, I guess.

HINT: And this goes for any time you're gun shopping. Bring a BoreSnake along in whatever caliber you're seeking, and a flashlight or borelight and a case to cart it out of the store with. The case is optional, but I always run the BoreSnake through the gun in question (slightly dampend with Hoppe's or whatever) so I can inspect a wiped-out bore.

As a fellow Minnesotan...mind sharing the location of said rock that I may have a look under it myself? :p

LOL, nice try! I've seen what happens here when someone reveals a source! Just look around, there are plenty of small towns a couple hours away from the cities:)

I like to stop in out of the way places also. My former job had me all over SC and all of western NC. I used to find all sorts of good bits and pieces.

I know a shop right now that has CASES of ammo, pistol and rifle. Work took me near there on Friday, I very nearly stopped in to add to my stash.

I saw this a while back on this thread http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=5351084#post5351084

Here is what he had to say if your too lazy to read the whole thread to see what he had to say.
Depends which one. The Yugo SKS which is the most common one by far, does not have a chrome lined barrel.

I would keep the Norinco, especially if it still has the bayonet lug, most had them cut off during the 94 ban. The Yugo's are pretty common, but it up to you I don’t have them in front of me so I really cant tell you what to do.

Let us know!

In my book it is still only worth $69.95. I can not emagine why a person would buy an SKS when for the same money they can buy a beautful American made rifle that is more more reliable and accurate. I brought a the Russian made SKS and AK47 back from Nam in 1968 and was not overly impressed with either and still not impressed by the clones either

How many reliable, accurate, and cheap US made semiautomatic 7.62x39s are there?

The Mini-30 doesn't fit any of those, so I'm curious.

^ How was it out of the box?

Does it have a .308 or a .311 bore? (I understand, but do not know for sure, that the later issues of these had a .308 bore.)
