Heard through the rumor mill that a new sporting goods store was opening in my neighborhood. Did a little looksie on The High Road, and things looked promising indeed. Having nothing better to do with my Sunday, I swung into the parking lot to see when the new store was going to open. Low and behold, it had already been open 2 days!

I was unprepared for it to be this large inside, having never been in one before. My wife started looking at clothes, while I of course, headed over towards the firearm section. A nice, big firearm section, probably about 100 feet long. Like other folks have said about these stores, I was unimpressed with their method of displaying pistols, just stored on pegs, rubbing against one another.

I was on the lookout for poor gun handling, but for the most part everyone seemed safe, and I didn't see too many guns being handed out, and then the salesman walking away. Then again, since this was opening weekend, there were about 8 or 9 guys working the gun counter.

While I was looking at pistols, I saw they were very big on Glocks, SA XD's and Tauruses. But, they also had some unusual things, like an NAA Guardian, as well as some NAA Mini-revolvers. Which was neat...I had never been to a store that had oneof these in stock before, while this place had enough that you could compare the feel of a Black Widow to a .22LR, to a .22 Mag frame.

And, they had all the pistols arranged nice in neat, in labled colums by caliber. So, leave it to me to be a butt-head. I pointed at one row of Tauruses and asked if the had a Model 731, in .32 H&R Magnum in stock. All that got my was a blank look from the guy behind the counter.

They had a great ammo selection. I still don't think they could beat Wal-Mart's WWB price, but most of their other stuff seamed very competative. And, like I said, a good selection. Stuff like 6.5 X 55, which I haven't seen anywhere else around here.

I'm not a reloader, but I think a place like this could keep reloaders happy for a LONG time. There were two full aisles 25-feet long full of reloading stuff. And then there were cases and cases optics, and knifes, and GPS Gear, and I didn't even look over their archery or fishing sections.

My wife was even happy because she found a little camoflage dress with a pink ribbon that would fit on my daughter.

I didn't buy anything today, because I didn't have my check book. I'm heading back tommorrow though. The had a NEF Handi-Rifle in 7mm/08 that they are only asking $220 for. I'm not sure I can resist. I think it will make a great deer rifle for the wife.

So, to wrap up, if you are a Washington resident, and find yourself running around the Kitsap Penninsula, I recommend swinging by.

With it being less than 4 minutes from my front door, to their front door, I think my life is going to get a lot more expensive.

We had one open up a couple months ago in Los Anchorage. After recovering from overwhelming choice, I started refering to it as the Holy Shrine. Everyone out here knows what I'm talking about when I mention "Holy Shrine". I embarrassed my gf by bowing to the bronze moose.:D

Not even!

Bluesbear, that's like 45 minutes from your front door...and 30 minutes of it would be sleeping on a ferry...

I like SW on the whole, bet with all things there comes some caution.

Thier serivce for the sale is OK, thier service AFTER the sale blows! If you buy somthing from them at thier great price and it works forever then you are fine; but, if it breaks or doesn't work, it is "back to the factory" with you. No exchanges on firearms, optics, or high dollar accesories. No gunsmiths on site.

The other thing that makes me stay away is after they first came to my town, they targeted the little shops and put three of them out of business with thier low and matched prices.

I took a couple of years but I think it has stableized here in Boise. People that want immediate selection and low price but do not worry about service go the SW.

People like me who do not mind having to order things in but love the "old school" mentality of service still shop at the little guys shops.

I am not saying they are bad or good, but don't be surprised at a few "I hate SW" or "dont buy from SW" threads :)

priv8ter, with the rate increase added on top of the summer rates I'd have to save a LOT to justify the trip.

Besides if I keep telling myself it's too far away I won't go there and spend too much money.

theres not much i buy from SW, their ammo isnt that competitively priced (at least for handguns), a case of PMC will cost about $269 at SW, when i can be real cheap and get a case of blazer for $193, or go down the street and get a case of reliable reloads for $220 in brass i can collect for whenver i start to reload.

i do like the variety of .22lr ammo, sometimes i like to go through the more 'exotic' HV stuff rather than the cheap bulk packages that always have some duds in them.

on everyday items, walmart has SW beat on prices.
