First off I'd like to appolagize for starting another 'Which 1911 Is Right For Me Thread', now that that's out of the way...

Want to get a 1911, not for a cool extrimley accurate gun that i'm going to mount a laser sight onto or go all tactical with. I'm basically looking for a nice, classy model without all the bells and whistles. I guess something i'd expect to get handed down by my grandpa, except he never had auto pistols. I've mostly thought about the Springfield G.I. models or Mil Spec models. I prefer the parkerized finish, but would open up to a stainless or blued model. I'm not looking to spend much more than 600 on this pistol, limiting myself to a used pistol. American Made is important to me for this practiclular gun so i've put Nornico , Tarus (if they make a 1911?) etc out of my options.

Not to list as a buy and sell but if you have what I am looking for feel free to PM me.

If you can narrow your choice to one finish, and model, why not try a WTB classified in that section of the forum.

taurus does make a 1911..and a really good one at that and NEW for the price you have mentioned... you may also find some used springfields for around that price...

If you can stand to not buy "American Made" i would go with a Rock Island Armory Tactical or GI. they are quality and are definitely the best bang for your buck in the 1911 configuration.

i recently bought a RIA Tactical from Sarco Inc for $385 plus shipping and FFL fee. pretty dang good deal.

check em out.

The Phillipines is not a US territory. They are a sovereign nation.

If a parkerized heirloom 1911 that is made in the US for under $600 is the goal, I would recommend a good used Colt. A Colt like this one that I picked up for $450.

You can buy a used colt for that, that has little to no use.

Please God, no. Shop around and buy a reliable USED 1911 made by a reputable manufacturer. And not a Kimber either.

That sounds like Xaviers Colt, if you want something to hand down to your kids all the others are copies of the Colt 1911.

Springfield Armory M1911 pistols are made in Brazil.

Get a used Colt.

I agree about staying away from Kimber.

Every Kimber I have ever come in contact with has been fantastic. Compare their number of units sold to their perceived failure rates as compared to other manufacturers and you will find that they are at least as reliable as any other 1911 on the market. I paid $630 for a NIB Custom II a few years ago, and I don't remember if it has ever had a failure to fire, feed, or eject. If I were allowed to, I would carry it to war tomorrow. my three best shooting friends have sold their other guns and bought Kimbers. One just got a stainless one for his wife.

If I were to look at a different 1911, I would try the STI Spartan.

I'm partial to Springfield. But out of curiousity, whats wrong with Taurus 1911's?

Not a thing with mine, it's been 100% with every ammo and magazine I've ran through it.

The OP asked for an American made, basic no frills 1911.

While the Taurus is an OK pistol, it does not fit the OP's criteria for a 1911 "without all the bells and whistles." Nor does it fit his desire for an American made pistol. In fact, he went so far as to say Taurus was not an option.

Let's not derail his thread with suggestions that do not fit his criteria. If this turns into a Kimber vs Taurus vs STI vs Les Baer vs Mama Goose it will probably descend into irrelevant debate that does not apply to the OP's question, and it will be closed.

Smith and Wesson 10282:

I paid $780 for mine new a couple of weeks ago, its a pretty common gun that has been around for a few years so I would imagine there are used ones out there in your price range. I did a good bit of research on entry level 1911's, and the Smith's seem to have a reputation for reliability and better quality control. Made in USA, known for pretty good customer service though I have no first hand experience. I am so far quite pleased with mine. For the money good fit and finish, very few sharp edges, though the bushing needs a little filing on it, and seems tight. Here is a old Gunblast review:

The Sprinfield is a fine choice

that fits your criteria. If you want a "plain Jane" 45 that is U.S. made, or at least made by an American Company, you probably want either the Spingfield or a Colt 1991A1. I bought the Taurus because I wanted some of the Bells and whistles. I love it but that is not what you asked for. The RIA would fit your criteria very well if you can change your mind about it being made in America.

1st pick: Colt, used, new, or what ever you could find within your budget

2nd pick: Smith and Wesson. Personally, I don't like them. I mean an external extractor on a 1911:scrutiny: their just not "traditional" enough for me.

3rd Pick: Kimber. If I bought one of these I would trade it for the first Springer I could.:D Kimbers are just to hit or miss, sure deadly accurate but you got about a 50/50 chance of getting one that will cycle EVERY round.

The Springer's are IMO the best for the money, by a pretty good bit, but they are Brazilian made. Can you really beat a 1911 with a lifetime warranty, that you'll probably never use?

I just checked and Kimber doesn't make a basic 1911. at least not what I consider basic. The only "custom" features I would consider in a basic 1911 would be a lowered ejection port and a beveled mag well. Beavertail grip safeties, skeletonized hammers and triggers, checkered mainspring housings, and fancy sights are all custom gun options not basic 1911 G.I. or Mil Spec standard.

The slide and frame forgings are made in Brazil, but the Springfield Mil-Spec comes closest to my, um, I mean your, stipulations. It has everything you need - good trigger and sights you can see, plus a lowered ejection port - nothing you don't.

Look to the Springfield mil-spec or a Rock island armory for the money i dont think you will do any better then the Rock island. i have many 1911's some where in the area of 42 i have had more but scled back. i own many different and the ones i got rid of seem to be those everyone is hot for lately, but i hate Colts and Kimbers and will never reccomend these to anyone.
i would buy a Springfield or the Rock island the Taurus is a fine example of what an entry level 1911 should be.
