New (to me) 686 no dash

I got off early today at work due to a shortened session of mandatory computer systems training, I was able to run my one of my LGS. In the used case I spied a long barreled 686. I ask to see it and its a very minty 686 no dash with a 8-3/8" barrel. I asked how much it was, when I found out, I just had to have it. CCW in hand, forms filled out and away I went. I was bummed out when I had to send my 586 back recently and since its off for repair I was Jonesing for a 357 wheel gun.. This one ran flawless through 50 357 mag and 50 38 specials about 20 mins after purchase. I never imagined I'd like the longer barreled revolvers, but this one is superb. I'm hopeful my 586 will come back equally impressive.
 
Congratulations, you are now the soon to be proud owner of one of the finest revolvers ever made. I carried a 686 with a 4 inch barrel my first 8 eight years with the PD and then we went to the Glock 20..... The 686 is one fine piece of equipment,,, well done.
 
Nice. I picked my 5" up last week and it has already become my favorite handgun. If I didn't live in Grizz country it would take the place of my 629 has a hiking/camp gun.

Photobucket is what I use. Underwent a recent change so it's not as intuitive as it used to be but it's free & unlimited hosting.

Here's my 4" no dash. Look under the crane where the model number is. There was a hammer nose bushing recall and when the upgrade was done they stamped an "M" under there. Mine hasn't been done but so far no problems.

Yeah, photobucket still seems to be the best, despite recent retrograde-
'upgrades" like fishslayer said. Slicker looking, but less intuitive. But still fast, free, and effective.

But back on track, IMHO, the only thing that can sit in my fake red-head's panty drawer, besides a genuine Wayne Novak custom Colt, is a 4" 686 no dash. One perfect piece of mean machine. Mine get's my due regard and I rewarded it with some rare-ish 1973 S&W Texas Ranger smooth targets.

Not entirely cosmetic, btw. Smooth grips on big magnums is something I learned from an aged wheel-gunner years ago. Maximized surface area (thus reduces felt recoil), and eliminates the "bite" of checkering. If you shoot magnums much, try smooth grips and a firm Weaver grip (fore/aft pressure - a neglected aspect of his teaching).

PS, I read your prior post on the 586 issue. Please understand that was the shipper being idiotic, not S&W. I can tell you shipper stories of idiocy all day long. S&W is a big company and can screw things up like anyone. But they aren't to blame there and DO make things right on the whole. They are not at all like Kimber or similar. They are indeed "go-to" folks.
 
Yes, smooth grips are a must, I really love the "gunfighter" style with the wrap around wood with finger grooves. I've got several set of badgers on my ruger single actions and some hogues on my 57-1. My favorite big thumper is either my stainless Ruger NMBH in 45 colt with 5-1/2 barrel or my blued 4-5/8" barreled NMBH in 41 Mag. The 41 will throw a massive fireball on a dim day when stoked with a stiff charge of 296/H110 topped off with some home hard cast and water quenched lead loads.
