New to milsurp - K-31 - help w scope choices...?

I'm a pistol shooter newly invested in a pair of K-31s. After a bunch of reading, I ordered the Accumount clamp-on 6" mount, essentially the same as the St. Marie mount with a slightly extended range for ring mounting. Most of my use will be 100 - 300 yds with a rare, maybe once a year chance to try 600 yds. I want to scope one rifle with a decent but not financially extravagant unit...

So, questions as to an optic...is it correct that a 40mm objective will clear without interference?

I'm thinking that a 2-7 or 3-9 is the way to go, mostly because of the variety of models available...thoughts?

Brands I've begun reading up on are Leupold (warranty and availability used), Sightron (cost, warranty and excellent reviews) and Barska (warranty and experience with their spotters).

Any thoughts as to brand or model recommendations would be appreciated ...specifically, features to look for as opposed to "just marketing flash" ... I'm thinking an extended hood, lockable focus, 'click' as opposed to smooth adjustments...etc.

On my walnut K31 I used a St.Marie clamp on mount and a new Weaver K6. I think the objective is 38 or 40 mm. No problems at all and I'm very pleased. These rifles are just plain quality.........Essex

The one piece of advice I'll offer is to be sure you get scope rings tall enough to mount the scope and clear the rear sight. I have the St. Marie mount, Warne 7.3 rings (medium height), and I had to settle for a 32mm scope because the ring for the adjustable objective on a 40mm wouldn't clear the rear sight leaf.

If you go for a 40mm scope, especially a 40mmAO scope, be sure to get the tall scope rings.

Thanks for the responses...I got Millett med rings w the mount but other sizes are easy to pick-up.

I'm kind of surprised there aren't more comments...I thought everyone who has owned a scope would have an opinion on the features for those needs.

I have the same mount. The rings that came with the mount are pure junk. I tried a set of tasco rimfire rings- they wouldn't hold a zero. I ended up buying the tallest set of Steel Burris rimfire rings that I could find. I currently use a cheapo Simmons 8-point scope (3-9x40) and it clears the rear sight ok. It shoots well and holds its zero perfectly despite the crappy scope.

When you put the mount on a rifle, it will have a little for and aft slop to it, hold the mount forward while tightening the screw, you want the mount as forward as far as possible, that's the direction that recoil will want to send it.

As far as a scope goes, I would not reccommend the scope I'm using, I have too much parallex problems with it, and the adjustments kind of hinky. For a budget scope, I would go with a Bushnell or a Cabela's Pine Ridge scope.

Have you checked out the options for an extended eye relief scout scope mount on your K31? I think that would be ideal.

Here's a few pics to illustrate how the scope sits on one of my rifles. Note: the scope bell clears the rear sight as long as the scope is far enough forward- Where I have my scope set, if I have it any further back, it will hit me upon recoil, so clearance of the rear sight is no problem at all.

Thanks for the replies and pics...I'll start with the rings I have on hand and see how they set and/or last... current deals on Burris Fullfield or a used Leupold are looking good.
