ok guys I just got a new tumbler from Frankford arsenal so what do you all use in your tumbler. I am thinking crushed walnut and NU Finish the car wax what do you say.
Fill 3/4 ups with walnut, and check about 2 hours. Depends on how shinny you want it.
Put dryer sheets in with the media, it cleans the media and attaches the dirt and tarnish from cases. Extends life of media. Change dryer sheets after a tumble session.
CC does a great job too, but wears out faster than walnut while doing it.
Walnut cannot polish like CC.
I would recommend having at least two batches of media : One for really dirty brass, one for cleaner brass ( if you just wanna remove case lube, or for cleaning dies), and perhaps a third for finished round tumbling if you want to do that.
Your really dirty batch will need to be replaced the most often due to wear and accumulated crap.
I "fund" my dirty cases batch by using the media that is being retired from "clean" batch use.
Get the lizard bedding walnut from the pet store. Its the right grind and a little car polish even on the first use. Just let the tumbler run about 10 minutes with the polish before adding your cases. Add cases in small batches until you see some no longer being carried around by the media then dip them out by hand until all are being carried around in the media. Cover and let them run about 3 hours. BTW, I tried the dryer sheet thing and decided its not worth the trouble.
Lizard Bedding at Petsmart or some Walnut bird litter brand name Kaytee 25# for $22.00. It isa a little courser then lizard liter, I have a 2/3 Bird litter to 1/3 lizard bedding. a little nu finish and 2 hours in the tumbler. I recently added a Utilitech dusk to dawn timer from Lowes. This is a plug in timer that will allow 1-8 hour intervals. Just a piece of black tape over the sensor
