Went to the range for a few hours today with my new XSE Commander.

I took the following ammo, in various weights from 180-230gr, ball, JHP and semi-wadcutter :

S&B
Fiocchi
IMI
Winchester white box
UMC
PMC
Hornady
Winchester Supreme T
Winchester Silvertip
Aguila
My own handloads

I cleaned and lubed the Commander last night and took two factory mags (replaced original follower with Tripp followers) two 47B Wilsons and two unknown mfr with flat dimpled followers.

No FTF, no FTE, five fail to load. The gun was running glass smooth for about 300 rounds then I shot the S&B out of it. The batch this box came from has got to be the absolute filthiest ammo I have ever fired.

Even the 185gr SWC fed great, loaded ahead of 5.3 grains Titegroup.

I field stripped the gun, wiped the caked on residue from the S&B off the ramp and and continued another 40 rounds or so.

Impression :

Trigger has a slight amount of slack, almost imperceptable creep, but snaps at break 4.4 lbs (measured). Sights are typical three dot Novak style - excellent. I replaced the wood grips with a pair of Hogue finger grooves and the improvement was fantastic.

The lighter weight frame allowed for slightly snappier recoil than a steel frame gun. About like a P226 stamped frame with 147 grainers in it. The SWC handload is somehwhat a powder puff, but still cycled without a problem.

The silvertips produced the most recoil and flash.

The mags all dropped free except one of the no-names, but it finally started to fall free after about 15 rounds thru it (what could I expect for 8 bucks ?).All mags locked the slide upon empty.

The duck-bill wasn't too bad, but it is MUCH better than nothing.

I am going to do a little shopping for a new IWB and clean it up good.

For a stock pistol, it's better than many I have by a long shot. Pleasant to shoot (moreso with the Hogues).

Probable improvements will be to polish the trigger just a little, and take out the slack, go to a set of tritium sites and think a little more about the duck-bill.

Barrel lockup is tight, accuracy at 25 yds (sandbags) averaged around 2½". I could see some ammo grouped MUCH better than others. The IMI and 200gr Hornady XTP are both hella good. The Aguila was all over the place with inconsistent recoil too. S&B grouped OK, but the wax-like residue was nasty and stunk to high heaven.

Brass was ejected in a relatively small area about 10 feet away. Firing pin strike was uniform on everything, no brass shavings anywhere in the gun.

Overall, I am happy as a clam with it. I will work a few more reloads thru it to see if I can find a sweet spot and carry the XTP until/unless I can find something else that groups so well and burns clean.

The only downside is I have to go and reload all the brass now :D

this is an excelent and informative report, only thing "wrong" is that after reading a report like this, i want one of whatever the gun was. how much was it and where can i get one??? naaah, only makes it worse. i just gotta get over this .45ACP thing.

What Happy said...

...thanks a lot. Saw one of these junkers at a gun show. Retch...

And the darn thing keeps calling my name.

Now what do I do?

My friend has one of these and I've shot it a lot. I've tried to trade him ofr it or buy it outright as he doesn't shoot it much and perfers his Sig 220 in .45. No accounting for taste, but the 220 is a fine pistol. However, the trigger on the LW Commander XSE is awesome and its as accurate as any full size 1911 I've shot. If I had one, it would be my everyday carry in a heartbeat.

"How much?"

That's the problem. Recently, I see prices upwards of $900 for these things. I just can't justify paying $900 for a $550 - $600 pistol.

MSRP is MSRP, but the value to an individual in the marketplace can be and usually is vastly different.

Quite true...see it all the time with people buying $500 Brazilan made springfields that are only worth $100 :neener:

LOL! This may even be better than the cast vs. forged Hi Power discussion. I have to confess I have a SA bought in 1994. After 11 years and thousands and thousands of rounds, its been perfect and as good as new. Would I like to have a NRM Colt or XSE LW Commander. You betcha! Do I think they are better than the others? Dunno, but I still want one (or two).

Now new Colt SAA's? No thanks, I'll stick with my USFA! :)

XSE's

I have the XSE light weight in .38 Super and a XSE Standard weight in .45 ACP
could not be happier with them both the 38 Super has turned into my carry gun of Choice
2.5"@25 yards out either one with just about anything i feed them
I carry 124gr Gold Dots @ 1350fps in the 38 Super and am very happy with load and preformance.
The nice thing about the .38 super vs. .45ACP is how quick the 2nd shot comes less recoil and muzzel flip

Nice report. And good to hear since I ordered one a coupla days ago =). I got it from SportingArms for $809 +tax. The woman I talked to there said they have gone up quite a bit recently and were getting a little harder to find lately.

I ordered the lightweight commander with the teflon coated aluminum frame and brushed stainless slide.

Airboss, you're killin me. That's beautiful and in .38 Super too. They must be really hard to find. I should have bought one a few years ago when they were under $600.

Just got a fullsize 38 super in and its acalling my name..............Keennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, rescue me from the safe......................taaaaaaaaaaaaakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeee me hooooome, looooooooooove me, dont sell meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Not to hijack the thread but what decent defense rounds exist for the 38 Super? I know of a gun shop that was a Colt Commander in .38 Super and I passed it up Thursday due to the caliber. I did leave with a Stainless full size Colt. :)

38 Super

Remington does a 115gr JHP and Winchester a 125gr JHP.
I shoot a 124gr Gold Dot hand load @1350fps That looks as if it would leave a Mark. :D

This gun is on my most wanted list. I'd like to find one for under $800 though. Sigh.

I bought my XSE .45 for $780 about 1 1/2 years ago. I am happy with it now, but that is after two trips back to colt. It had several problems that they fixed under the warranty. Also, the right side of the ambi. safety recently broke off. I had the local gun smith replace it with a stainless steel one. That cost me just under $100. I have a love-hate relationship with that gun.
