New Zastava PAP

I bought a new Zastava PAP today. $379. It doesn't have a chrome lined barrel. Is that a problem? Also uses single stack mags. The LGS owner said I can modify it as long as I use US parts. Is that correct?

There are several threads on this rifle on the akfiles. IIRC opening it up for double stack mags has difficulties.
