Nickel plated Smith

I have the honor of owning a 4" Smith & Wesson First model .38 S&W top break revolver, that is also known as a Baby Russian. It is nickel plated. or rather was nickel plated. Some of the nickel plating is discolored and there are a few places where it has worn or flaked away.
Is there a method I can use to improve its appearance WITHOUT making it look reworked or lose it's historic value?

Step one for me would be to see how much of the corrosion can be lifted with an old penny or suede brush.

Be certain to use lots of lubricant to limit any additional scratching while doing this.

The Mr Clean cleaning pads for glass stove tops works nicely too with care to the amount of pressure and lots of clean oil as well.

In the end, I'd use a high quality wax to fill micro-abrasion, re-assess and re-address as deemed necessary.
