The PROSTAFF will absolutely handle the recoil of your 1895 45/70. I have put 60 rounds of .375 H&H under a PROSTAFF 3-9 BDC scope with zero issues. I would consider a BDC reticle as well. Your round's ballistic's would benefit greatly from what the BDC reticle and Spot On offer. Not that you'll be shooting long-range, but anything that help's accuracy is a plus in my book.
I do some freelance PR work for Nikon but believe me, I wouldn't tell you the PROSTAFF scope will do the job for you if it wouldn't. Drop me a note with any question's.

I used the Prostaff scopes on various rifles and they worked good, mostly. Unfortunately I got one that had a problem and I sent it back to them for service. They lost it and said basically....Sorry
I just figured it as a sign of the times as far as large companies go nowdays...and went back to buying Leupold ( they really stand behind their products).

Stony, Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Did you have delivery confirmation? How long ago did this happen? Nikon revamped and moved their repair facility 18 months ago and from what I can tell things are going much smoother. I have never heard of them losing a scope before and couldn't imagine them not making good on one that was received, logged in and then misplaced.
If it wasn't that long ago and you still have some documentation perhaps I can help you out?

It will "probably" work just fine. But I'd trust anything Leupold on a hard kicker. The VX-1 line is about the same price and about the same quality glass as the Nikon. With MUCH better eye relief, which will help on a hard kicker too.

The Burris FF-II have a reputation for toughness too. About the same price and I'd take it over Nikon too. Wouldn't want a silver scope on anything.

For a little perspective, a 12 ga. 3.5 in turkey load has recoil energy of 77.75, .375 H&H 46, .223 3.0 and 45-70 with a 405 gr. bullet 32.60.
Hope this helps you make up your mind?

I use a 3-9*40 prostaff with BDC on my " Hammer" - the 458 Socom, and its held up so far !

Lots more pounding than your 45-70 is likely to endure, unless you use it A LOT !

brman,
I basically just gave up on Nikon. The man I dealt with told me they had moved the repair facility and I had probably returned it to the wrong one. He asked for a description of the scope as he had a bunch of them with unknown owners. I didn't keep any paperwork after that point as I just figured it was a goner. I sent it to the address that was indicated in the original paperwork and thought I did everything right.
I was really disappointed as I was a Nikon fan and still have a set of binoculars and a spotting scope from them, but sometimes life just works out that way.

Bl., That 458 Socom is a beast of a round and comes in close to 70 on the recoil scale with a 400 gr. bullet at 1600 fps which puts it above a .416 Rem. !!!!

I have shot a lot of 12 ga. rounds in my day and I don't recall them hurting like the 1 .416 I shot.

Stony, Sorry to hear about that. There is usually something I can do to help out but with no paper trail there's nothing for me to follow.

I put this PROSTAFF 4-12 BDC on my T/C .308 for my Father In-Law to use deer hunting. Followed it up with 3 range trips to make sure he understood the BDC reticle and how to use it. Next thing you know he goes 3 shots 3 Ks. deer including a huge buck at just under 300 yards. Pretty good for a deaf,79 year old Korean war Artillery Unit Vet.
