guys I have two of these 1851 navy's in 44c and I am having troubles with the hammers bein blown back at a lot of fouling bein blow into the action and even blowing spent caps off the nipples so I now know the nipples that came with these have large holes so I need good nipples so where to get the best deal on a set of nipples and what brand or type is best?? thanks! :uhoh:

What name brand are they. Their are different threads on On some guns. I use "track Of The Wolf nipples", you have to order by pistol name brand. They work for me.

Italian nipples are crap.
Replace them with Slix Shot nipples, available from Longhunter supply or Desperado Cowboy bullets
Or with Treso nipples -- I buy mine from the Possible Shop
Then use Remington #10 caps, and all your cap/nipple problems will go away.

I've not used them, but I've heard that Track of the Wolf SS nipples are good also.

I shoot cap guns in cowboy competition every week.
If you want the guns to be reliable shooters, this is the way to go.

I prefer the Ampco/Treso nipples from The Possibles Shop. I'm one of the few who don't care for Slix-Shot nipples; those side vents seem to fragment the caps more, not less for me.

thanks guys! them ampco nipples are or have they been around for a long time? they sure look to be good nipples and possible shop are they pretty fast about getting a order out?

Yes, they have been around for a long while, and the Possibles shop has been in business for a long time too. They'll take good care of you. Be sure you order the Pietta versions:

I believe the Treso nipples were previously made in Colorado. The owner of the Treso factory relocated and now the new factory is in Montana or Wyoming, and they are now "Ampco" nipples. Same thing as far as I know.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

SliX-Shot nipples are the best made for your purposes. Do yourself a favor, through the factory nipples in the garbage can, and get some SliX-Shots and you'll never look back.

Ampco & Tresos IMO have the smallest flash holes. The Ampco nipple I had was so small that I got inconsistent ignition but that was with a rifled musket. It was a pin hole. The Treso nipples I had on a revolver worked just fine. The TOW SS Replacement nipples fit the Rem#10 caps the best. Next best were the Butler Creek SS nipples. I have yet to get a set of SlixShot nipples. If one of my pistols runs fine on stock nipples that take the Rem#10s I leave it alone. Some guns need their replacement nipples shimmed. I've gotten beautiful shims from McMaster Carr but you can easily make your own. Email/PM me if you want to know how to make them or buy them.
