I was at the range lately with my Norinco 1911A1. I shot about 100 rounds (I had other guns with me as well) and I had 4 or 5 pretty bad jams. The problem was that the slide basically crushed the empty case and it was struck in an angle of about 45 degrees. The removal of the magazin was not possible anymore and I had to pry the empty case out with a screwdriver. It happened only with the last round which make me believe, that the rounds in the magazine helped with the ejection of the empty cases. Therefore I think the solution for me is to buy a new extractor. Do you agree with my conclusion? Which extractor should I get (it should be sold by Midway)?

Thanks,

Fabian

It apparently is extracting fine, or the case would be in the chamber, not in the ejection port.

What it's doing is not ejecting.

Check the ejector pinned in the frame and see if one leg of it is broke off, allowing it to move when the case hits it.

The extractor recently broke in my 1917 Colt 1911. I found one can replace the extractor by locking the slide back, removing the firing pin holding plate and then replacing the extractor. BE CAREFUL! - the firing pin can launch to places unknown when the firing pin plate/extractor holder releases it.

The problem was that the slide basically crushed the empty case and it was struck in an angle of about 45 degrees.

And crushed at two points on the case mouth about 15-20 degrees apart too, I betcha.

Almost. While rounds in the magazine do help with ejection, in your case...they keep the extracted case from dropping off the breechface.

What is happening is that the extractor is clocking...rotating...and dropping the case. The claw still has a grip on it, and it drags the case part-way back into the magazine...depressing the follower and preventing slide lockback. When the slide runs forward, it tries to feed the empty case and crushes it between the breechface and the barrel hood.

More tension may help stabilize the extractor and stop the clock...but the real cure normally requires fitting an oversized firing pin stop. This is assuming that the extractor channel isn't located too far to the right, in which case, the only cure is a new slide.

Joe...Good call.

Thanks for all the help.

@ 1911Tuner

- How do I raise the tension on the extractor?
- Which firing pin stop would you recommend me to buy?

Wouldn't it help to install a new extractor ... one which will not "clock" the empty case?

1. By bending it a little. Easy. Too much bend and it'll cause problems feeding.

2. EGW

3. Maybe. Maybe not. It depends on how close the edge of the firing pin stop fits to the wall of the slot on the extractor that it fits in.

Since you're not in the US, getting the parts could pose a problem.
