Not a Rifle at Present...Aero Pistol Build

My 35% completed thread contribution....gong to end up a .300 Blackout PDW style pistol........someday. This is my "on sale" pistol as I'm buying the components piece by piece when I see them on sale. Taking my wife's approach of spending money to save it. So far I'm $702.05 into it, with a total estimate of $2100 including the Trijicon MRO & mount. I'm thinking I'll have it done by 2019 due to the upcoming sales......

Aero Stripped lower
Geissele lower parts kit
Larue MBT (arrived on Monday)
Maxim Defense PDW Brace with JP captured spring
Radian Arms Raptor "LT"
Magpul Polymer Trigger Guard
Magpul MOE Grip
Aero Complete M4E1 Upper

The Maxim brace is pretty cool and about 2" shorter than a standard buffer length brace/stock when collapsed.

Nice looking AR pistols.

Now I'm feeling a little self conscious with my basic PSA pistol AR.

Hmm... maybe I should add some "bling" to the matching PSA pistol kit I have sitting at home waiting for me.
Grins here from me. I have essentially the same PSA kit gun ( the flat dark earth Mpul version) awaiting assembly here at my home. I jokingly told my beloved wife Miss Penny that since I cannot now afford some of the beautiful accessories available, maybe I need to have her use her Cricut vinyl cutting machine to make me some tiger stripes. Or flames. Or "My Little Pony" stickers to put on mine until more funds show up!
Beautiful guns you folks have and I am tickled for you! I'll share a photo of mine when I get it done, although it's nothing fancy. But it's mine! Don.

@drobs, @Tallbald don’t feel one bit undergunned! A few months back I owned 1 AR and I bought it a decade ago. I decided to buy my wife to be an AR for her wedding gift (because she likes that sort of thing). That lead to a build which lead to this build. There’s an Anderson and a PSA in that mix and I like ‘em just fine and an FSB/insulated guard always means business! In fact that’s what I plan for the Anderson and close to my RRA setup. Fancy don’t make bigger holes.

@Chuck R. thats gonna be sweet when done! Sometimes I wish I could double like a post. I still get excited seeing the traditional looking ARs, almost like buying a new truck but I’m finding lots of inspiration with these Superbuilds like yours and Gunny’s.

I've had a bunch of AR's over the years. Most were sold or traded off when I wanted something else. AR's are dime a dozen even more so lately.
Currently I have Windham carbine and these 2 PSA pistols. Plan get a pair of 20inch PSA A2/A4 rifles. I've been behind on quantity lately.
Now's the time to start buying / building these rifles / pistols in bulk. Nice thing about PSA is they run.

I'd bet in the future we'll be looking back at these days and prices in awe. I've saved this "sale" add for posterity.

“Undergunned” wasn’t quite the term I was searching for, in fact I agree with you wholeheartedly about the current AR market and a big part of me says buy more parts and complete more firearms rather than buying expensive doodads that cut down on quantity.

Of course I’m also the odd ball who until last week had a $300 Leupold atop a $100 pellet rifle, which speaks to my impractical at times nature. I’m still formulating a list for a Full Retard (expensive, not Auto) rifle build though once the kids have each built their own. :D

THANKS!

I built my last one the same way...over time and on sale. It takes a while, especially for some of the boutique parts that sell quick. It's almost like it's an AR15 "scavenger hunt", but part of the fun is researching to find the "perfect" combo of components. I'll save cash where I can except for 4 things: barrel, BCG, trigger and optic.

It's been a good thread, hopefully it keeps coming. I like to see what other guys idea of "perfect" is.

Don,

You have to post a pic that new AR pistol of yours!

Somein come in da mail today! My enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that I’ll be out of town for 9 days hunting deer & squirrel before figuring out a range day.

Per another thread on muzzle devices, I again deferred to those with experience and chose a linear compensator from Kaw Valley Precision over an extended flash can. Fit and finish is everything THRers claimed it would be (excellent).

Brace is SB Tactical’s SBA-3 and it is as comfortable as I imagined when strapped into position or shouldered.

Finally, the RDS is Vortex’s new SPARC AR. Why Vortex? Well, I own a StrikeFire and an original SPARC, both of which have worked fine the past 8 years or so, and because PSA bundles this sight with the SBA-3 brace and their own LPK with EPT trigger group for $250. Had I opted for a Sig Romeo, which I’d like to try, I’d have paid the same amount and not gotten the LPK thrown in for free. On to pictures!

Nice, but desperately need a report on the KAW Comp.

I'm waiting till the Veteran's Day sales for my next purchases and a linear comp is on the list. I'm waffling between 2 now, the KAW and the BRT Covert:

What are you looking at for BUIS IF any??

Here's my current thoughts: https://scalarworks.com/shop/iron-sights/peak-fixed-iron-sights/

Normally Troy folding would be my answer or Magpul for emergency, but the above looks interesting and price competitive. With all the sales on Diamondhead and MBUS Pros I might be chewing over options. Not uber critical for this one as it’s main intent is range toy but I like to keep utility in mind.

@Varminterror uses KAW comps which is what pushed me that direction over a KAK flash can and could give you a better idea on what to expect. I may still pick one up for comparison sake since both are inexpensive.

Thanks! I've got (so far):

Troy folding
Magpul BUIS (plymer)
Magpul 45 Degree Offset pros

For this type of gun I'm thinking fixed BUIS and a MRO on a lower 1/3rd Co-witness. I've read of guys sighting the RDS for Supers and the BUIS for Subs (300 BLK). Plus I really like a fixed front sight for a defensive gun, one less thing to flip should something go wrong.

If you get a minute, could you please take a measurement of your barrel W/KAW from your receiver? Still sorting out some OAL calculations.

That is a nice AR pistol! I really want to hear about the comp too...

I guess I better respond, since mi amigo @Skylerbone called me out on it!

I’ve been using linear compensators for a long time - before the Noveske Firepig even. There are different types with and without baffles. Baffled versions do more for recoil reduction and sound mitigation at the shooter than the baffleless “blast cans” like the KAK or Nov Firepig. I only tried the KVP the first time (probably 10yrs ago?) because I knew I wanted a linear compensators, and they were located only about an hour from where I was living at the time. As Skyler pointed out, and his pictures reflect, the Kaw Valley Precision (“KVP,” not KAW, just sayin...) is a rather stylish option in the field of unassuming “blast cans”. Blast Cans, or the cylindrical Levang do have that chunky look some guys want, especially when nested into the forend. I expect the Levang reduces recoil and noise slightly better than the smaller diameter KVP, but I know I can’t tell the difference at my earplug or my shoulder.

One anecdote which stands out for me (probably because it was so recent, and was a rare instance where I shot without hearing protection): I took two shots on my buck last year with a 20” Grendel using a KVP, my ears weren’t ringing at all. Not as quiet as a suppressor, naturally, but quiet enough I was very happy for my hearing, and of course, only costs $55 and can get shipped to my door TODAY, instead of $1500 plus a 200day wait time. Comparatively, if I shoot my 6 Creeds with Impact, SiCo, or Fat Bastard brakes, even with my electronic muffs, but not plugs, my ears will ring. So anecdotally and not-so-scientifically, the KVP in front of a Grendel must be quieter at my unprotected ear than my 6 Creeds even with muffs.

I threw one on my Seekins rifle for a week, really meant as a thread protector when the Omega was removed, it’s notably quieter than bare muzzle, and certainly quieter than my SiCo brake, with NEARLY the recoil reduction of the SiCo 3 port compensator.

I’m sure there are larger diameter baffled linear compensators which are more effective, but the dead cylinder profile of most of these just turns me off.

I do greatly wish the KVP XL were available in all steel, bored for 6mm. I’d REALLY love it if they were fully welded so I could pin and weld one on my son’s 22 instead of going SBR with it.

Thanks for the review.

Decided to "assume risk" and ordered the BRT "Covert Comp" today along with the Faxon Gunner 9" .300 barrel (on sale, so I'm still saving money by spending it!). Want to keep the length to a minimum with the 9" barrel and the covert comp is only 1.95" long, basically same length as an A2.

It's "Alive!!!" (and so is this thread!!)

Final parts (to make functional) arrived this week. I got back from a business trip to Armenia last night, and due to jet-lag woke up early to complete:

Really, really, liking the Scalarwoks BUIS. Not 100% sure of the mounting yet. For a "business" carbine set up I prefer: Fixed FSB and a 12 o'clock light setup. There might not be enough room on the SLR 8.5" rail to make this work. Won't know till I play with it a while, but a offset 1 o'clock mount might be in my future.

Going to run out today/tomorrow and get a couple boxes of 300BLK, cause none of the reloading stuff is here yet. I also like to "proof" builds with at least a box of factory ammo. Right now I'm exercising some "tactical patience" until the Veteran's Day and Black Friday sales for the RDS & mount.

So far, so good......

I know I’m a day late and a dollar short on this but with the 7 1/2” barrel: from center of pivot pin to end of comp. is 9 1/8”. OAL is 23 1/2” on the nose, 26 1/8” with the SBA extended. I’m a nose to CH guy so I’ll run fully collapsed, and height is 9” from top of optic to bottom of grip, 11 1/4” with a 30-round PMAG.

Taken as a package, 2 3/4” Wide X 1’ Tall X 2’ Long if you were boxing it up or bagging it.

I finished my first pistol up with a basic nitride 10.5" PSA upper last week:

I ran 40 rds of cheap junk through it this weekend, and it ran fine with and without the can. It was a little jumpy with a standard carbine buffer installed, so I might see if an H2 or H3 smooths it out. Pretty much all of my AR shooting lately has been with my 18" precision AR with rifle length gas and an AGB.... so smooth. It could be that I've just forgotten how carbine gas systems feel.

Blast from the 10.5" wasn't as bad as I was expecting with my usual double ear pro. Just plugs was a bit uncomfortable.

I picked up the Sig Romeo 5 + 10 Pmags deal at PSA. Once that comes in, the carry handle is going back on my 20" rifle and the pistol will get the Romeo 5 and eventually a backup rear sight. I may swap on an FDE handguard to match the pistol grip and brace, we'll see if a deal comes along.
