not sure about load of American Pioneer Powder

I got a pound of Amerian Pioneer Powder FFFG today. The web site says that it measures "volume to volume" as other black powder substitutes.

I've shot 17 grains of Pyrodex in my Pietta 1851 Navy and it seemed fine. So my understanding is that I would just use the same VOLUME of Amerian Pioneer Powder and everything should be fine and equal. Correct?

The container also says "Use no lubes and seat powder firmly" No lubes? Everything I've read about other powders says to use lube. I use beeswax and olive oil with a 1/8" felt pad. ......so I shouldn't use that wad anymore?

Has anyone else used this powder in an 1851 36 caliber Navy?

Use volume for volume, check poi and adjust. No lube means in the chamber. Dry and clean. Same for nipple.
Lube over the ball or a wad over the powder is proper.

Okay, that was easy to understand. Thanks for the info.

Hi Cliff The APP will work in your revolver but you will likely find it's power lacking. You may well have to use a bigger charge to get the power you are used to. It will burn fairly clean too.

Hello Cliff6,

I shoot Black MZ (about the same as APP) in my cartridge conversions with no lube.
There is no need for lube with this powder, it creates it's own.

Yep. Same here. I'm using up some old Goex Pinnacle which is also the same. No lube needed, but in cap and ball revolvers I do put a dry wad between powder and ball.

It won't be as energetic as black, I use a tiny bit of lube, Pinesol on a patched round ball, revolvers I use a tiny bead of lube between the wad and ball.

Howdy

The only time I have used APP is to load some 38 S&W, because I could not find any suitable .360 diameter bullets for Black Powder.

That being said, I loaded them with these .359 diameter bullets and they worked fine in one of my antique S&W Top Breaks. I did not want to load Smokeless for an antique S&W Top Break.

As it says on the bottle, unlike real Black Powder, no BP compatible lube is necessary. The bullets I used had standard hard, Smokeless bullet lube.

Volume to volume is a tricky thing. Yes, APP is supposed to be loaded with the same volume you would use with real Black Powder. Set your adjustable powder measure, or dipper or what ever you use to measure powder to what ever setting you would use for real Black Powder. In my case, I used enough APP so that when the bullet was seated it contacted the top of the powder with no compression. Not really a big deal if you crunch the APP a little bit when you seat a ball, and you do not need any lube.

I used the stuff for a time. Somewhat less powerful than black, but it works. Didn't use it much after that. It looks good though, and the name sounds really cool, 'American PIONEER powder," exactly what gunpowder needs to be named.

I am not sure it is less powerful, just fluffy. I weighed my volumetric 30 grain powder charge and found it weighed 24 grains. Grain for grain by weight, I suspect power similar to goex.

I have shot a couple deer with a round ball over a suitable load of it.
