Commercial pilots, judges, and private security contractors? Because they are low paid jobs who go into harm's way for others, right?
I appreciate our cops and military as much as the next guy (probably more than the next guy) but at the same time I sometimes get weary of hearing about how everyone else's job is more righteous than mine.
Do paramedics and firefighters get shot at more than the average guy?
99.9% of all legal avenues of employment provide some essential service to society.
You would be amazed how often EMT's & Firefighters get shot at...stabbed...bitten by humans...
or attacked by dogs...fortunately they've been making bunker gear out of Kevlar/mix compounds...
While its bullet resistance is low, its better than nothing
Back in the Bad Old 80's when things were a little less nice, to go to certain HUD complexes,
we would have to return to station and get BPV's, then go to the fire after cops said it was clear...
often having to wait outside the gate until it was safe.
If a FF/EMT gets shot at, we then slow response for the next year to that location...
If they get hit, REALLY slow response and only onscene after police clear the area for the next 5-10 years.
If shot & killed, they might as well put it out with a garden hose, 'cause it'll be burnt to the ground before we get there.
Nice? Not really, but that's the way it goes. Most FF's will never admit to this...but it is common city practice.
I've been retired for a few years, no problem telling the truth about it.
For dog attacks we quit being nice about it a long time ago...
if the dog is large, they simply receive the business end of a Halligan.
Most of us love dogs, but have zero tolerance for stupid owners that can't control theirs.
We understand Fright Bites...nip & runs due to fear...
but flat-out attacks from Pitts or Rottys...no way.
Dog attacks a FF/EMT, it generally doesn't get a second chance. Halligan or axe usually do the job.
