Purchased a used 30-30 at the SAR show in Phoenix yesterday.:)
Lever action, checkering, beautiful bore and overall like new.
My question is, the barrel is marked "Mod. 30AW". Is this a 336? Or is it something similar but different?
Either way, I'm very happy and can't wait to get some trigger time with it.
Figured you Marlin experts could clue me in.

Googled it and found refernces to it being the economy version of the 336,but none that really had a lot of info on it.
I'm thinking it could be a 'made for walmart' piece, but not sure.
Heck, it IS a Marlin after all,and i'm betting it shoots like one. :)

SASS,

Thanks for the response. I did a search also and found pretty much the same thing you did. Although there was a GunTest from the past that said it was a better shooter than the more expensive 336. Who knows.
Anyway, it seems that they originally came with a sling and a scope, neither of which I got with mine (used). But I'm still happy with it.
Thanks again.

It is essentially the same as a 336. Typically it lacks barrel bands, which might be a good thing, and doesn't have a walnut stock. Distribution might have been through a big retail chain like Sears. They may or may not have microgroove rifling.

Another advantage is that they can be purchased for less $$. :D The only penalty is the aesthetics and who really cares about that when it comes to a rifle that will do the job it was intended to do.
