NEW YORK)—Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association of America, announced today that he has been provided a formal legal opinion that NRAnews can legally and lawfully perform as a news media company and, thus, qualifies for the media exemption from campaign finance law restrictions.

Following is a summary of that opinion:

“We are of the opinion that NRAnews should be deemed a media company and therefore is entitled to distribute news stories, commentaries and editorials that both mention federal candidates and advocate the election or defeat of a federal candidate. Under the relevant campaign finance laws, media companies are permitted to engage in such speech without limitation. Although neither the federal statutes nor the regulations of the Federal Election Commission (‘FEC’ or ‘Commission’) define the specific characteristics of a media company, there can be no doubt that the National Rifle Association (‘NRA’) engages in extensive media activities. For over a century, the NRA has published magazines that cover a variety of subjects related to the Second Amendment and gun ownership. These magazines now enjoy a circulation that is greater than Newsweek magazine. For millions of Americans, these publications constitute an invaluable source of information and commentary about issues relating to the mission of the NRA. In the First Amendment context, the Supreme Court has emphasized the hallmarks of a press entity are ‘informing and educating the public, offering criticism, and providing a forum for discussion and debate.’ First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti, 435 U.S. 765,781 (1978). NRAnews engages in precisely such activity.â€

NRAnews is currently broadcast live on NRAnews.com and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Network Channel 126, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. ET. The show is rebroadcast the following morning from 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. ET on SIRIUS Right Channel 142. Future plans will enable NRAnews to be distributed through a growing number of media vehicles.

I love it, I hope it gets bigger than CNN, Thanks NRA

What do you guys think.

Well, it's OK I guess...

Nice place to visit if you just happen to come across it, seems like preaching to the choir if you ask me.

Where are the television commercials? Why did Mr. Gottlieb have to defend the NRA on ESPN instead of them doing it? Why are we still having to gather together un-united bunches of individuals to fight our causes when the most powerful (?) group in the land lies almost dormant? It is time for them to ramp up and be heard....daily.

Does nothing for me I'm afraid, money would be better spent in a higher profile manner.

don't get me wrong, i don't agree with everything the NRA does, but the fact is that we'd be resembling England or Australia right now if it wasn't for them. Dissention and debate are hallmarks of free speech and a free America, but there are some times we should quit bickering amongst ourselves and get behind the best thing we gun owners have going for us. I'm not saying don't keep on having a bad attitude about it...it's your right to...but don't NOT support the show because of it.

There is a certain amount of "preaching to the choir" about it, but think of where this is going..."Cam & Co." ISN'T NRA News. It's a first-test-the-waters step. There are considerably fewer NRA members than there are Republicans as a whole, right? So since they're basically marketing the show on Right and (presumably) other shows like it in the near future, they can at least pick up some of those already somewhat inclined but aren't members, thereby increasing their power and helping make things easier on you and me.

Besides, with the incredibly polarized political climate we're in now, more Republicans are LOOKING for something else to be a part of that pisses the Lefters off. It's a huge pissing match between the ruling parties, and the NRA is making its plug...just like you'll see other "special-interest groups" doing in the near future if McCain-Feingold isn't overturned soon. NRA News is just the first...there will be more to follow.

Stay safe.

I think some doubters here are missing the forest for trees.

Until this announcement, NRA could only speak until allowed to do so by our new abridgement of the First Amendment.

Will NRA's stories be heard by just the die-hards? Yes. But they will be "allowed" to be published in other news media outlets under the cloak of "journalism."

Were it not for this media outlet, the NRA couldn't say a thing unless the commentary was given the blessing of the mainstream media.

I like this idea, and I like it a lot. And I think that as other regular Americans realize how their speech is being stifled, they just may gain more respect for the stands that the NRA has taken.

Unless you're Barbara Streisand, it's hard not to see this as a win-win situation.
