Hi Everyone,

Picked up a box of 200gr lrnfp 45 acp projectiles, and when I look up information for reloading with clays, I get min OAL 1.1225". When I go to the groove cast in the bullet I get must shorter, about 1.195". I've read other people recommending OAL's but no one is giving the sources for going shorter than 1.1225".

Anyone help with finding sources?

Thank you,

Think about your post...1.195 is longer not shorter than 1.225. I assume you meant 1.225.

OAL is determined by a "plunk Test" and if your OAL is shorter than the load data just lighten the load a tad before working up your load if the OAL is much shorter. Keep in mind load data is a guide and when OAL is different you can adjust the load to compensate.

In your case your only .030 shorter. and even though your using Clays which requires low Gr weight You should still be safe with the starting charge @ 3.6 Gr listed in the load data chart http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

But if your wanting a minimum "powder puff" load you can drop .1 to .2 GR off of your listed data for a starting load.

Yes, the listed min is 1.225, thanks for catching that. :D

Just looking for something in writing. I might contact bullet manufacture since it's their groove that is < 1.225" oal.

Thanks,

I think I found the answer for the 'groove' and why I am too short(< min OAL) using it in my 45 acp casings. The projectile appears it belongs in a 45 long colt. :/

I have two Sig 1911 pistols that have short chambers. I load the same exact bullet at 1.180 and my other two 1911's I load at 1.200 so your not far off at 1.195

It's because of the profile of the flat point compared to a round nose that the OAL is so short.

Yes, you have a .45 revolver bullet.

Pay no attention to the roll crimp groove, as it is not used with an auto pistol taper crimp.

I cast and use that bullet in both .45 acp and .45 Colt, as it's an excellent bullet for both applications. I load my .45 acp to 1.205" OAL, but I'm using Bullseye for my powder, but will probably switch to Winchester 231 at the next reloading session, since I have more of it than Bullseye.

Hope this helps.

I'm using Lyman's 200 SWC in 45 ACP, and I consistantly had feeding problems untill I stopped loading it to Lyman's recommended COL. The length that feeds perfectly in my 1911 is 1.175".

I have a sig as well that I load that LRNFP bullet it and it take 1.15 for it chamber reliably. But Im shooting a min powder charge for plinking so Im not concerned about pressures.

I will say that my XD-S and my Kimber will both chamber that bullet at 1.22 with no issues. But I make all of them to 1.15 so I don't have to separate OAL cartridges specifically for different guns just for plinking.
