A friend picked up a new/used Remington 870 12ga sporting wood furniture with 28" Barrel and we took it out yesterday and shot it for the first time. Comparatively my main gun is a Mossberg 500 12ga with 24" Ported & Coned Barrel and a Knoxx Spec-Ops.

The first shells we fired out of the 870 were Federal Target Loads, I fired one and was rather surprised (and slightly disappointed, considering my gun has so much compensation) that in comparison to my gun the recoil was actually very similar. Then for fun my friend decides to blow off ONE 3" Nitro Magnum Turkey Shell. He fired it standing up and it rocked him back hard enough he decided it was time to case the gun for the day. Now on a normal day with my gun we can usually run through 8-10 of these 3" shells before getting sore.

Thus comes my observation and advice regarding usage of the Knoxx. The Knoxx works better as the loads get heavier. I've considered the situation yesterday and yeah it makes sense when you start consider the mechanics of springs. So I would recommend if you are only intending to use a gun for 2 3/4" Trap Loads then maybe the Knoxx isn't for you, but if you are intending to fire turkey shot, slugs, or 00 buck then the Knoxx is definitely a proven recoil reducer.

In my experience, the lighter shells can actually appear to have more recoil.

With a slug/buck load, the springs spread the recoil impulse out over time. But a light target load doesn't make use of the springs, and the impulse is sharper.

Compare to having your head smacked with a pillow vs lightly tapped with a bat.
