Oct 2: Canby, OR, Gun Safety Course for Homeschoolers

This event is open to those homeschoolers between 8-18 years old in Oregon. I understand they are gonna be holding some others for southern oregon early next year.

Sorry for the short notice, I just noticed that there were 3 openings.

You MUST register and respond directly to Angela. I cannot be a go-between, but say hi when you show up! I will be there with my 8 year old daughter, Josie.

Gun Safety is something everyone should know!

In this class, a certified firearms instructor will teach kids and parents principles of gun safety, and kids will have an opportunity to practice marksmanship by shooting at targets. Each child will have an experienced shooter at his or her side at all times on the range.

There will be no charge for this class. It is open to homeschoolers anywhere in Oregon, and the suggested ages are 8 and up. (negotiable)

Well, it was a very wet day in Canby this last Sunday.

12 homeschoolers ranging in age from 8 to 17 showed up for the NRA safety portion. several good questions were asked, and they showed the kids many different types of rifle and handguns.

At that point, the instructors selected two .22's...a Ruger Pistol and a 10-22, and out they went. The targets were set up about 20 feet away from the shooting benches, and the berm was just behind the targets. While still under the cover of the the shooting hut, they walked each child through the operation of both guns, determined which eye was dominant, and then had everyone put in ear protection (the rally point was about 70 yards back).

After donning goggles and muffs on top of plugs, each child selected a target and they got to shoot their first rounds. The 10-22 has 10 round clips, so they loaded a single in the chamber, they kid would set off that one, and then they loaded a full clip. After the range was cold, they removed targets and came back to the rally area, and the next pair were escorted up to the firing line. Mutual admiration of holes in paper then followed.

The instructors name was Kevin Starrett of http://www.oregonfirearms.org/ who graciously volunteered his time. I didn't catch the name of the other gent who was helping him, but he was equally patient with squirrely kids.

Many, many thanks to the RO who volunteered his time (again, very nice guy, didn't catch his name), and to the Canby Rod and Gun club for allowing us use of facilities, coffee and their range. My daughter says, "Don't forget to thank them for the playground equipment, too!"

After the shooting was over, parents let their kids cavort on the playground, burning off some steam before the ride home, and the parents talked homeschooling and rkba stuff for about an hour.

then we came home...a wonderful Sunday.

On a Proud Papa note: My 8 year old, Josie, did quite well with the rifle (41,23,21,32,41), and not so hot with the pistol(10,5,2).
