Washington (AP) - A District police officer was shot in the hand early Friday morning after he stopped a man for running a red light in Northwest.

Moments earlier the suspected gunman shot two men in an alley.

All three victims were taking to local hospitals. No word yet on their conditions.

This is another good reminder that there is no such thing as a routine traffic stop. They are "Uknown Risk" traffic stops. An Officer may be stopping a car for a minor traffic infraction, but never knows who's behind the wheel (or what they may have just done). Officers who want to go home at the end of the shift learn to treat every stop very seriously. Unfortunately that sometimes grates on everyday people who don't understand the Officers hightened state.
Also a good reminder for everyday drivers. Before engaging in "Road Rage" behavior with some moron behind the wheel, consider the fact that said moron may be a violent armed felon who gives your life no more regard than the roadway he's using as his personal playground.

This must be a mistake.

You can't have a gun in Washington DC.
Only cops in DC can have guns.
He must have shot himself accidentally.

Hand wounds are gnarley, I hope the officer recovers.

I'm confused as well. Handguns are illegal in D.C. Does this mean gun control doesn't work? Oh, now I get it. This just means we need tougher gun restrictions in neighboring states like Virginia. The redneck legislature in VA continues to allow commoners to have one handgun a month. Maybe one day they will see the light and ban handguns. After all, the violence in D.C. is really a gun problem, and has nothing to do with the decline of the 2 parent family and gang warfare over drug turf. Why can't those conservatives understand that guns are evil?
