Oklahoma Governor Signs Pro-Gun Legislation!

Friday, April 28, 2006

On April 20, Governor Brad Henry (D) signed House Bill 2696, sponsored by Representative Trebor Worthen (R-87). This important legislation will eliminate any threat of restrictions being imposed on lawful uses of firearms or ammunition during a state of emergency. HB 2696 passed the House overwhelmingly with a vote of 94-1, and unanimously in the Senate with a vote of 46-0.

On April 25, HB 2615, the “Stand Your Ground Law,” passed the Senate with a vote of 39-5, and will now go back to the House for concurrence. HB 2615, sponsored by Representative Kevin Calvey (R-94), recognizes that the citizens of Oklahoma have the right to expect absolute safety in a place that he or she has a right to be.

Please call your State Representative at (405) 521-2711 and ask him or her to support HB 2615.

I wonder if my letter had anything to do with it?

Mr. Shelton, you stated that

"During states of emergency, I think police need total control. They don't need to worry who has guns and who doesn't. If the governor calls for Oklahomans to relinquish their guns, the public needs to do so,"

Since tomorrow is April 29th, the start of the LA riots, I'd like you to consider for a few moments the impact on the people of LA and their 'total control' by the police. 50 to 60 people were killed during that week while the police were held back for their own safety, THEIR OWN SAFETY!!!!!! If it is up to law enforcement to protect citizens in public places, why were they held back for their own safety?

It is the height of irresponsibility, on your part, to suggest that the average citizen must rely on law enforcement for their safety and protection when law enforcement could be held back for their own safety. Any legislator in any capacity that cannot reflect back upon the LA riots and the aftermath of Katrina is too stupid to be let out of the womb, much less hold public office.

You should do all of your constituents a favor, Mr. Shelton, and resign immediately so those people can vote someone in that truly cares about their safety and well-being.

Disdainfully,
DKSuddeth

It probably helped that I sent it to every one of his fellow legislatures, the governor, and the local paper. :neener:

The biggest thing on my want list is blanket civil immunity for a clean shoot. We already have it for any shooting inside your house but I don't think so for other shoots.

I'm trying to decide whether to approach the ORA who helped the stand your ground bill or just go to my legislatures.

I'll have to look in to the legislation. Is the stand-your-ground the bill that legalizes deadly force against car jackers and while guest at others homes or is that another bill?

I really wish we'd legalize open carry. Tactical arguments aside, it's be nice to be able to go outside in our 20kt light breezes and not have to worry about breaking the law if I forget to hold down my shirt.

Amen to that. I _thought_ it was OK to walk around on dirt roads in rural OK until I had a Craig County deputy put me face down in the gravel while pointing his Glock at me and telling me over and over he was going to shoot me if I moved. Not 100 yards from my house but five miles from the Vinita city limits. I _used_ to carry my Glock 17 on my belt when I went for exercise walks but now I force myself to carry concealed. Which is ridiculous considering the location. You can walk for a mile and pass two farm houses.

The actual thread from when it happened is here just in case any fellow Okies want to get the details: http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=80795

I'm still very unhappy about it after all this time. And it STILL makes me have negative feelings toward any LEO's I meet around here. I realized the other day that I'm 44 years old and I've never witnessed the criminal use of a firearm. Then I realized I had never witnessed a use of a firearm by a cop or a civilian in self defense either. Except for the incident above. The one time in my whole life I've ever seen a cop point a gun at a person and threaten to shoot them and I was the target!! Not a good feeling. If you've never been there, it REALLY bothers you after the fact when you consider that the idiot could have just killed me accidentally and how would that have been good for anybody in society?!

Told you. Still upset! I'm better off not talking about it!

Gregg
