Oklahoma Mule Deer

One of my clients asked me to come on out and visit him in Western Oklahoma today. We were talking about hunting, and he said I am more than welcome to come to his place and hunt antelope, mule deer and huge white tail.


Anyone have good sources of info on the hunting in far western Oklahoma panhandle (Texas panhandle as well)??

I owe these guys a trip to visit them, and the idea of heading out in the fall - when the weather is more reasonable - strikes me as great.

I didn't know they had Mule Deer there. What other game does Oklahoma have that I might think about bagging?? And, are the mule deer (and white tails for that matter) trophy quality out there?? I'd like to get myself a big mulie. And a decent Antelope for the wall.

countertop, I'm from central OK myself, but I'll try to remember to ask some friends about western OK tomorrow. I know there are plenty of coyotes out there if that's your bag, and there are elk in a few places. Turkeys are well-represented, and there are lots of pigs in the southern portion of the state.

Were I you, I'd start my search at http://www.wildlifedepartment.com and see what they have to say. And hopefully I'll be more help tomorrow.

In my understanding:

You canNOT shoot mulie does ever, even on doe days.

You CAN shoot a mulie buck just as if it were a whitetail buck. Ditto for hybrid buck.

What other game does Oklahoma have that I might think about bagging??

In that part of the state, there are prairie dog towns, if varminting is your thing. Beyond that quail, pheasant, turkeys, waterfowl, geese, snipe, woodcock, sandhill crane, furbearers (fox, bobcat), feral hogs (in some parts), coyotes, beavers, skunks, badgers, raccoons.

They own substantial parts of the western part of the state. Its out past Guymon and Boise City.

Client was saying I could have my pick of Antelope. Doesn't seem to be any mention of them at all on the DNR page. I don't know about Elk. He didn't mention that either. It could be that the Antelope are in either Texas or NM - they literally own tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of acres there.

OK does have elk in three counties; Caddo, Comanche and Kiowa.

If the landowner applies for "landowner" antelope permits and draws one, he can transfer it to you.....otherwise, you must enter the drawing for Oklahoma Controlled Hunts and try to draw a tag...........

Deer tags are over the counter, you can shoot either a whitetail or mule deer buck and whitetail does........

There are also Rio Grand and a small population of Meriams turkeys in the Oklahoma panhandle as well as prairie dogs, coyotes, bobcats, pheasants, bobwhite and scaled quail, mourning doves rabbits and other small game........

There is a small number of elk in the panhandle, but, as far as I know, you can't hunt elk in the panhandle........

Just go and take a 270 (130gr)or 25-06 AND a shotgun. Plan on a 300+ yard shot. Not alot of hiding places out there.
Lots of pheasant and quail some years, early dove is unbelievable.

Yep, plus a small herd in Cherokee county, and a small herd in Pushmataha county. They allow a harvest of ONE bull per year from each of these herds (right now), via controlled hunt apps.
