I am doing a school science project that involves testing the expansion of bullets. I am using my grandfather's Colt government model .45, which was accurized by the famous Frank A. Pachmayr. It's a beautiful gun, and is my grandfather's prized posession.

Anyway, we bought 3 brands of defensive ammunition (Hydra-shok, Gold Dot, and Cor-Bon JHPs.) After buying the ammo, however, I realized that the Cor-bon's are +ps. Is this safe in a Colt 1911? It appears to be in very good condition, it was well-cared for and stored well. It is maybe about 40 or 50 years old. We're only going to be firing 3 of the corbon's out of it.

I just want to check.

Well, just three rounds should not hurt the pistol. I certainly would not make a habit of shooting +P in older 1911's.

It will take substantially more than 3 +P rounds to hurt an old 1911. Three cases? Might want to keep an eye on the locking lugs when field stripping. Three rounds? No worries.

Just for kicks put a Wolff 16 or 18 lb recoil spring in it as the one in it might be worn out or a light wadcutter spring. This will make an old accurized gun run -forever!:D

Only shooting 3 rounds should not hurt the gun but because it is your grandfather's prized posession I don't think I would. Where are you going to do the firing? If it is at your local shop/range I am sure they have a 1911 that you can rent. That way you will be able to fire more then 3 rounds. I am guessing you will want at least 5 shots from each type.
