Bob, I think your DS might be a little newer as you have the short grip frame, which I believe came in in the late 60s early 70s?
I have the same vintage as yours with the short frame and it is a dynamite little gun. Better sights than Smith and an extra shot, and easier to shoot accurately.

Both of my Colt DS models actually have walnut (?) grips on them; but
I thought that COLT always used the term "Coltwood"?

Dan, old bud, "Coltwood" is a trademark for plastic. The walnut grips are not Coltwood, but real wood.
