for those of you who have trouble with your red dot looking more like a red mishapen blob

i have found that i'm getting the best defined dot with a lense made to the precription of the reading portion of my bi foc's

according to what i have read the FAR sight prescription should have been the correct way to view the scope but my actual results are much better with the near sight

supposedly the dot appears at 30 ft on the focal plane but apparently not?

just thought i'd pass that along

;)

Thanks for the info.

Being 24 and already having worse vision than my mom and dad put together is pretty bad. I was thinking about putting some optics on a handgun. Now I will probably go with an actual scope over a reddot.

My bifocals got misplaced somewhere about 3 to 5 years ago. I hated 'em so bad, no bothering to even look for 'em! For now anyways, ' just keepin' a couple pair of Wally World's readin' glasses handy. And "long distance glasses" in the glove box. :(

With iron sights on rifle, I still shoot best with no glasses. Just focus on front sight and let target blurrrrrr. With handguns tho, that Crimson Trace laser grip is a wonderful thing - if the little blurry red dot just did not wobble around so much. ;)

i'm finding my reading presciption is also good for iron sights,,,pistol anyhow,,,havent got to the outdoor range to try the rifles yet,,,but my hopes are up!!

bi-focs are the worst (especially progressives) cause if you don't look through the lense in EXACTLY the same spot each time you can get your groups moving around on you,,,very frustrating

i cant see the front sights on anything without correction,,,

i couldn't see the big E on the chart when i was 9 or 10 (46 now) and it aint got any better

blind as a bat would only begin to cover it,,,

:D

When I was 45, I took my Weatherby 7mm Rem mag to the range. The scope was out of focus so I adjusted it. Next range trip I took my .30-06. The scope was also out of focus. I couldn't figure out who had been changing the focus on my scopes. Then it dawned on me it was my eye sight. I'm 50 now and it's just getting worse. I have a pair of Wally World reading glasses for my red dots and a pair of prescription long range glasses for my scopes. Nothing seems to help iron sights. Getting old BITES!

Focus on the dot

just as you would the front post. BTW, excluding my ccw piece, most of my handguns have scopes or red dots. They do wonders for bad eyesight.

heh,,,new saying around here,,,

"if a vacuum cleaner doesn't suck, it blows,

if a vacuum cleaner DOES suck, then it DOESN'T blow,

getting old both sucks AND blows!!"

LOL!!

:D

Now 71, my eyes started roving in my forties. Fuzzy, but not warm, for sure. Getting my AR last year, I looked through the peeps and saw what I thought were hairs or fuzz. Even poked through to "clean" them... no such luck.

Last August the sister-in-law had cataract surgery (she's 84) and sees well. That triggered me to, ultimately, do the same. I now have two 20/20 eyes that see no fuzz in my irons... and distance is clear. I'm super pleased. I'd had an exam for glasses Oct '02, by January '03 my eyes had already run out from under the new glasses. If cataracts are your problem, I recommend you at least consult an opthamologist re the possible fix.

What was totally wierd was after the first eye was done, it was bright out there - colors brilliant, all focused. The other eye saw things with a brown/gray/yellowish tinge on everything.

FWIW

thats great andy,,,

i'm not dealing with cataracts (yet)

ive been considering the lasik type surgery to improve my vision but i'm too afraid of poor results, besides i'd still need glasses to read so i figure why bother?

i'm glad yours worked out so well

I can shoot my rifles without glasses at 50 yards. At 100 yards, when I peer over the front post it seems there are two bulls, side by side. Not knowing which one to shoot at, I get my glasses out.

I can see the bull better with the glasses, but then the front post goes fuzzy, especially on short rifles (03A3, AR15). Not so bad on the long guns (Swede Mauser model 1896).

On the other hand, I'm just glad to be out there shooting. :)

Regards.

My distance correction works well with scopes & the front sight on rifles.
For handgun shooting I went to a trifocal with the middle splitting the
difference as I couldn't see my front sight at arm's length (shooting from a Weaver or isosceles stance). Haven't tried red dots or lasers.

Ironbarr:

Thanks for the good news about your cataract surgery. I'm going to have cataract surgery on my right eye in several weeks. Very glad that it improved your shooting and vision in general. I have posted several time on the shotgun forum about my poor performance on the range. Maybe after surgery my score will ipmprove. :)

are you shooting with both eyes open or closing the one youre not using?

Were you asking me? If I shoot at 100 yards with only one eye open, I still see two bulls side-by-side. With glasses it's better. At 50 yds it's ok, even without glasses.

The double bull must be something in the eye lens, probably part of surviving a long time. :)

Regards.

yes sleeping dog,,,

it was you,,,sorry,,,

hmph,,,never heard of that one before

i wonder if the gadget standing wolf mentioned here earlier (with link) might help you?

For all of you on a budget, Brownells sells a device called the Farrsight, which is similar to the Merit device, in that it increases your depth of focus with a variable aperture. It sells for less than $15, versus the Merit for $65+.

I even use it with some scope sights, and it definitely sharpens up the dot on my Ultradot red dot sight. Iron sights on handguns and rifles are in sharp focus, and so is the target. It's not too handy for speed shooting, and fast target acquisition, but works great for everything else.

I like mine so much, that I bought a spare. :D

Merit

Has anyone used the Merit device in the hunting field. I plan on hunting hogs soon with my 29-2 and was wondering how it would work and if it would be fast enough to aquire the target. Iron sights are a problem, but I am not in to handgun scopes.

The Merit sight does block your vision partially, so I think you might want to try before you buy. Hogs can be unpredictable, and the Merit sight would slow you down, perhaps dangerously.
