A buddy of mine called to ask about the value of an old S&W he has. It is a First Model S&W .38 Military and Police (Model of 1899) 6" barrel, fixed sights. It is a civilian version. Serial #15xx. It has holster wear, but has a lot of its finish and is fully functional and has been in his family maybe since it was new. He inherited it from his grandfather. They made about 21,000 of these. Any idea of a value for this?

I'll ask him to bring it by so I can take some pictures. I have an old Fjestad's Blue Book from the mid-90s, but I'm assuming things might have changed, one way or another, since then.

In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave the following values:
ANIB $2000, Excellent+ $1200, Excellent $700, Very Good $500, Good $375, Fair $250, Poor $150.
Check at www.armsbid.com for more recent prices.
