Okay. So I am considering dumping a few weapons to pick up either an AR-15 Oly Arms, or a PTR91. I have (to trade, and/or sell) a Saiga 308-1, a WASR10 and a Ruger P90.

My two choices:

Olympic Arms AR. Well M-4gery with collapsible stock, and top rail for a 4x scope, and rear iron sight. 10 mags, 500 rounds WOLF 62grains. sling.

PTR91. (base model).Maybe a 3-9x40 optic. 10 mags, 500 rounds WOLF 150grains. Sling.

I want one or the other. Full set up with combat rigging on my new toy. Wondering what you think should be the choice? Please give reason why.

These questions really devolve into a personal and subjective evaluation. Or at least that's how I ultimately take a decision on a purchase.

I will assume for purposes of discussion that you have shouldered and fired each of these rifles? That neither of them outshines the other to a degree that you are persuaded?

They are very different rifles in many respects. I guess perhaps first settle on the cartridge you want to shoot, and from that decision the choice of rifles should be easier. If you intend to shoot the Dirty Dog ammo through your PTR, you will not realize the accuracy potential of that rifle. Wolf is ok for blasting, but it is certainly not what one would choose for accuracy.

What I have come to really like about my PTR91, aside from accuracy, is the high degree of modularity. Assuming you keep an eye on parts count, there is a plethora of furniture you can install on the rifle. I like that it accepts the Hensholdt scopes, which are readily available these days at a very favorable price point.

Out of the box, however, the PTR trigger leaves a great deal to be desired, and in that department the Oly will perform better.

Since you have shouldered these two rifles, you already know that the PTR is quite heavy.

For me the choice was rather obvious, mostly because I really don't like the AR series of rifles. Nothing wrong with them, but I just don't like them. I enjoy what I perceive as the advantages of the 7.62 chambering, ease of handloading, very good accuracy, and a little more authority on target.

I did spend quite a bit more on my rifle to get it to the point of comfort where it is now. I bought a heavy buffer and a magpul stock, and paid an experienced riflesmith to install that setup. I bought a muzzle brake, and had the trigger done by Bill Springfield. The port buffer was a "must have item" if I intended to reload the brass fired in this rifle.

But for me at least, I have been pleased overall with my decision. Everytime I whack a plate or a rock at distance with the rifle, I smile as the plate twists about like it were in a hurricane. You just don't get that sort of reaction from a 556, of whatever flavor.

HTH.

Depends on what you're going to sell - this one comes down to the caliber, and "need" therefore...

I'd say, don't sell anything, but are you?

I'm very pleased to read so many favorable posts about the PTR-91. I pick mine up tonight.

I was vacillating between an AR or a Sig 556, but the power of the .308 in a platform so similar to the HKs I loved so long ago made me seize an unexpected opportunity to pick up a new in box PTR.

I'll be using some of the advice from this thread to modify my PTR to get it just the way I like it.

As a huge Sig fan, there's still a part of me that wants a 556, but when I think of the rifle I'd grab in a dangerous situation, I think of the PTR or MAYBE, my M1A.

I would get the PTR, especially over an Olympic AR. Olympic I'm sure makes good ARs, but you can totally walk away with a much, much better AR for the price of a PTR. my opinion doesnt really matter because my AR isnt an oly and I don't have a PTR, but that's my .02

Two very different weapons. I'm personally not much of a fan of M4geries. Too small of a bullet, too short of a barrel, mediocre reliability and I don't find them to be particularly accurate either. I'm sure they're a terrific close combat weapon for an infantryman though. They're small. You can carry a buttload of ammo. The collapsible stock allows for use with packs or body armor and the ergonomics are very good, but myself, I'd rather have a good AK. If I want an AR, I want it free floated with a 20" barrel and all set up to shoot MOA or better.

Olympic also has a mediocre reputation when it comes to AR's, although all the ones I have seen have functioned properly.

Now the PTR91 is another story. That I would like to have. They have an excellent reputation and it's undoubtedly the more valuable of the two. Oly AR's typically go for around $700, while PTR91's are around $1000. If there is any kind of ban enacted in the coming years, I would guess that the PTR will increase far more in value.

Well, the idea is that the OlyArms is cheaper. And I might be able to get a better deal. Also, more ammo cheaper.

With PTR I get more range, and accuracy.

What I'm wondering basically, is save up for the PTR? Or get an M-4gery pretty much right now?
