On the hunt for an American SxS

I have a Stevens 311. It’s a good solid gun, identical to the Fox B except the Fox has some pressed checkering. IMO the 16ga is the sweet spot in that platform. The 20 and 12 are both too heavy and clunky for their size.

The Fox Sterlingworth and LC Smith Field Grade are a step up, but probably not any “better” from a practical point of view.

Pretty much all American doubles are designed for general hunting with an emphasis on waterfowl… so they tend to have a lot of drop in the stock, and be rather heavily built compared to the light English guns that are designed for shooting driven birds.

The Fox B's had nicer lumber. I had a 311, pretty nice gun with a fairly golden-blond birchwood stock. The Fox B's used premium walnut. My 16 gauge has the best wood of all my shotguns, it's a beautiful tiger walnut that the stripes move when you turn it in the light.

My Springfield is basically the same as the Savage 311.

The stock is dark walnut, no checkering, and was made in the 40’s before they started the letter system for dating.

It’s a 12ga., the only model designation on it Is a tiny stamped 5100 on the lower right side of the receiver.
