Earlier this year I decided to try to make a knife that would look old. I wanted to make something that could have been made by a talented frontier blacksmith or gunsmith in the 1850's-1875's time frame. This is what evolved. I had no idea what I was doing when it came to giving it an aged appearance. It was all an experiment.

It is made from a 14" Nicholson lathe file with a stag handle and 3/8" bronze for a guard. I don't remember the exact dimensions but the blade is about 9" long and almost 1/4" thick. I made a sheath but decided that it looked too modern and am in the process of making another. It's cold outside and I need something to do to stay warm. :)

The antler color is the result of applying Febings med.brown leather dye until I got the look I wanted . Feibing's oil based leather dye will color damn near any thing. Even nylon carpet if you aren't careful. :D

That is really cool. You made that out of a file?
Id like to build me some knives; do you have any advice on a good place to find knife blanks or knife kits?
Again, very inpressive!

Briarpatch, I like Jantz Knife Supply. Shipping is fast and customer service is great. I've read good things about Texas Knife Makers Supply also have no personal experience with them.
