Hello

I looked over the Speer Gold Dot JHP +P 135gr .38SPL loads and want to buy a few boxes from an internet source.

Any members here know a good company or website that sells this new Speer Gold Dot load?

For details about this .38SPL load see the Speer website.

All the best;

We've been talking about these for a while. A damned fine load. The 357Mag light-load version ("Short Barrel" on the box) using the same projectile is a sweet slug too.

http://www.midwayusa.com has both calibers in boxes of 20...oh, wait, they're out of the 357. This stuff has been selling like hotcakes in both calibers.

If you have a heavier 38Spl (steel frame or anything 17oz or above) you might also look at the Remington 158gr 38+P lead hollowpoint (also known as the LSWC-HP+P). Probably the equal of the Speer and cheaper, and in fixed-sight guns more likely to print to point of aim. But in lighter guns the plain lead will get yanked out of the cylinder bores and the Speer 135 in both calibers is set up to strongly resist that effect in the Scandium/Aluminum/Titanium ultralights.

WEAPON: Ruger GP-100 .38spl NYPD model

Thank you for the details.

The weapon I just bought is a police surplus Ruger GP-100 DA only stainless steel 4"bar fixed sight DA revolver(whew! :D ).

I got from a dealer in Alabama listed at www.gunsamerica.com for about $375.00 total(S-H, FFL fees/etc).

I also looked at the 158gr LSWCHP .38 rounds in +P from W-W. I've heard the 158gr loads offer great marksmanship. Also the 158gr LSWCHP +P runs about a 68% chance of a 1 shot stop in most DA revolvers.

The Winchester Supreme JHP 129gr JHP +P and Extreme Shock loads in .38spl(FANG FACE type) interest me too. :D

Skip the "Extreme Shock" :scrutiny:.

Lemme get this straight: you've got a GP100 set up as a 38Spl and not a .357?

Interesting.

You can probably get a gunsmith to ream it to 357. Get confirmation over at Rugerforum.com but I'm pretty sure the metallurgy was identical. These 38spl versions of the GP100 were for police and security agencies (and some overseas sales) that didn't want that evil "Magnum" label.

If you leave it as it, you'll have basically an unbreakable gun. And you'll be slightly more accurate now with 38+P loads than you would be with the same gun in 357 - the difference won't be much and might not be noticable at all. (Err...on edit, that might not have been clear. 38/38+P ammo will be more accurate in 38spl chambers than it will be in 357 chambers. In a 357 gun, you need 357 ammo (even if loaded on the lighter side of "Magnum" territory) to bring out full accuracy.)

The Cor-Bon 110gr and 125gr "+P" ammo is very hot but won't hurt that sucker any. The single hottest 38+P load is probably the Buffalo Bore 158gr gas-checked lead hollowpoint doing 1,000fps from a 2" barrel, probably better than 1,100fps from your four-incher. That critter is a rip-snortin' monster and probably more effective from a 4" tube than most 9mm+Ps.

http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#38spl

Cor-bon used to sell a 158 just like it and at almost the same speed, but without a gas-check it leaded up barrels something fierce. The BuffBore is the only 158 lead gas-checked load you can get..."gas check" means it's got a copper base-plate to prevent the burning powder charge burning the back of the bullet and plating the barrel with what burns off. Other than that, it acts just like any all-lead slug. This allows you to drive a soft lead slug at rocket velocities.

The Remington 158+P lead hollowpoint isn't as hot as the BuffBore but it's a wee bit stronger (or maybe softer lead) than the Winchester variant. But then again, your 4" tube will probably drive the Winchesters fast enough to work.

The Federal is the wimpiest 158+P, avoid those period.

What else...oh yeah, that Winchester Supreme 38+P is usually described as a 130gr but it's probably 129. Another big-cavity design, good stuff, probably a step behind the Speer 135+P but not by much.

What else...

Are you aware that if you have two loads of the same weight in the same gun, one very potent and one fairly mild, they'll still go to about the same elevation? That means you can do most of your practice with milder 158gr loads, dial in the sights for that bullet weight and then practice just a little with (and carry) monster slugs like the Buffbore 158 or a respectable medium-power critter like the Remmie 158.

Me, I've set up my sights to the 130/135gr range, load 135 for defense, practice with 130gr jacketed ball.

Ruger GP-100 .38spl-NYPD issue

The Ruger I just bought is a NYPD/police surplus. It was never issued but was test fired. It's .38SPL and DA only. The dealer thinks Ruger made this GP-100 on a contract run in the early 1990s(before NYPD went to the 9mm semi-auto pistols as issued weapons).

State regulations prevent me from using any .357magnum rounds for armed security work(only factory .38spl loads) so the fact that I can't shoot any magnum rounds is no big loss.

I plan to get some custom work done to this .38spl then use it for armed security jobs that require a DA revolver.

I may also use it for CC/protection.

Thanks for the responses.

Well like I said, if you leave it as-is there are advantages in terms of the gun's capabilities as a 38.

And there are for damnsure some good "git'r'done" loads for 4" barrel 38+Ps.

Buffalo Bore 158gr

I've shot some BB 158gr SWCHP +P ammo out of my SP 101 and it was a STOUT experience - I honestly couldn't tell the difference between it and a mid-power load like the Remington Golden Sabre 125gr .357 load. Never tried them in my 4" bbl 686+ but I bet it would have been an excellent combo.

I guess I'm a sucker for punishment, but ordered some rounds today again from BB - this time the .357 158gr JHP. I figure for the experience I'll shoot maybe 5 of them thru the SP 101 and then the rest will go downrange via my 686+ to avoid undue punishement to my hands

And if you can find some of the Winchester Q4296 147gr .38 Special +P+ ammo, that Ruger will perform just like a .357 Magnum with ammo that still says .38 on the box.

The Ruger will eat it like candy.
And after all it IS for Law Enforcement use so it must be politically correct right?
