Anywhere you go, Unless it's somewhere where OC is common, just expect to be hassled, and be the best ambassador you can.

Carry your local Laws on a business card, along with the URL of the state website with the same laws on it.

Hand the card to the police officer, and any freakouts. Be ready to educate.

I OC in my car, and in my home, but at 6'5", I already make people nervous enough. In Portland I'd expect LEO within 5 minutes of stepping out of my car.

Check things out at Alabama Open Carry. You can OC in the state. The cops you talked to have misinformed you. We can show you the laws and have even won arguments with cops when told otherwise because we don't argue what is and isn't legal...we SHOW them the law. After that, the argument is over.

the law is pretty darn clear. to carry a pistol in Alabama, you HAVE to have a concealed weapons permit. unless you're on your own land or in yer fixt place of a bussiness that you own. The folks that can open carry include rural route postal workers, and law enforcement. As far as rifles go, you can carry them open in your vehicle (truck or motorcycle). Plenty of shotgun sportsman clubs around and I take my shotguns there on my motorcycle, totally legal. Even if you do have a concealed weapons permit, you still can't carry into federal building or hospital, library, and any other place that has a sign that says no weapons. basically to leave your home with a pistol, you have to have a concealed weapons permit in Alabama. Fols talk about the law not being clear enough on open carry, but when the law says that these certain folks are allowed to open carry... that's pretty darn clear to me that if you ain't one of the specifically allowed folks that can open carry... you ain't allowed to open carry.

Gun totin' Alabama Firefighter.

Only to carry concealled or in a vehicle is a CCW permit required and yes the law IS VERY CLEAR on that.

Federal law forbids the carry of firearms into FEDERAL buildings."No gun" signs do NOT carry the weight of law in Alabama but property owners can ask you to leave if you carry on their premises.

As long as you are not in a vehicle or are open carrying,no permit is needed
you ain't allowed to open carry.
Yes you are. There is no law preventing it unless otherwise noted.

Then you will be able to post the statute that prohibits it?

Summary
Alabama is a traditional open carry state. The only thing preventing it from being one of our "Gold Star" open carry states is their prohibition against carrying openly in a vehicle without a permit.

The reason this summary says what it does is because there is no statute making open carry, without a license, prohibited, except in a vehicle.

The Alabama statute that you are misquoting is this:
Section 13A-11-73
License to carry pistol in vehicle or concealed on person - Required.

No person shall carry a pistol in any vehicle or concealed on or about his person, except on his land, in his own abode or fixed place of business, without a license therefor as hereinafter provided.

And that is pretty darn clear to me that the statute prohibits carrying a pistol in a vehicle or CONCEALED (without a permit) and says NOTHING about open carrying outside a vehicle.

I do not live in Virginia but I have a close friend who does and is an active member of the VCDL. They have addressed the issue of open carry in all of the towns and counties that are known to give problems with people who open carry.

By showing up in force while open carrying and letting the LEO's exercise their own interpretation of the law, then suing as a result of the results, the VCDL has pretty much put to rest the issue in even the most stubborn areas.

It takes WORK, no denying that, but an active group like the VCDL can educate everyone present that open carry is not only legal but not dangerous to the public when done by legal gun owners.
